Much like the back to Eden method, I prefer to just refer this as the “back to common sense” gardening. because it is so common sense, and I think everyone should do this. I have seen at my house and time and time again the effects of mulching is just stunning.

Thanks for making this informative video. Your uncle's Hosta's are fantastic. Mine always get eaten by slugs. Best wishes.
Excellent video!
Good stuff. Their planting area looks excellent and there is no way a weed is getting up through that.
Beautiful examples really enjoy your vids . You just get cutier every time
Mulching helps so much I have been doing it for 2 years now
Great vid Luke! Your uncle's place looks beautiful. Can grass clippings be used as a successful mulch? Also, I used to have problems with blossom end rot until I started using bone meal supplement with an analysis of 6% nitrogen, 9% phosphate, and 7% calcium.
That's a good tip, those tomato plants look unbelievable…so healthy!
what a beautiful place, thanks for the vid, it is inspiring.
Im gonna miss your garden vid's . hope you dont leave us. dude I can see you gardening for life… even a visit to greenhouse keep us posted. 😉
Tomatoes do look very healthy, but I didn't see any ripe ones.
Is the mulch keeping soil too cool?
great tip, thanks!
Mulch is definitely great. Even if you cant get woodchips but can get sugarcane mulch or some other organic material it will help improve your soil and keep the moisture in your soil.
Hi Luke – just got turned on to the Back to Eden method this summer, and esp. after seeing your video – I'm convinced that this method works and just plain old makes sense to mimic nature in our gardening methods. Will definitely be layering some compost and wood chips into my garden beds instead of the typical tilling method that I have done over the years. Thanks so much – beautiful landscape and garden!
What do you think of the red plastic mulch invented by a prof at u New Hampshire ( I think)
Hi Luke, I'm not sure if you can help me with this or not, but my neighbor has 3 huge Italian Cypress that drops needles (?) into my garden. They are not exactly needles, but more like tiny branches. They make a nice mulch, but I'm worried about what acids could be leaching into my raised beds. Are there some veggies that like the more acidic environment? How about some No-nos. What wont do well in that environment. The sun light there is perfect for my 4 raised beds! Can you help me?!
yes – good point! Even with mulch, I do not know how he does it without watering, though. I live in an area that gets no rain for 6 months out of the year. Not sure where he is located, but maybe he gets rain year round.
We mulch our potted tomatoes and it helps loads in the heat to keep the water in the soil.
Thx for showing and noticing. Of course I have to adj for climate differences one thing about where Paul was..is in Washington. I'm originally from Fort Bragg NorCal and know the difference in water moisture in the air from 5pm – 9am never need to water and is very similar to any part of Washington State. For your area imagine no snow but that meany feet of rain.
the red mulch is a tool for gardens in cooler areas. Warms soil and plants and some,at least is reusable for several seasons, after which it can be discarded.

At what stage of the plants growth do you add the Mulch?
In neglected to tell you what kind of March to use and how far away to keep it from the tomato plant not very informative
Doesnt mulch attract slugs to your plants
