Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

The store looks amazing! I am all over the place right now. I think it’s just the season for everyone.
Happy birthday!!! Also thank you for being open about vet costs, it's a very real part of animal husbandry, but a hard thing to broach with people not actively involved in it.
Hi Jess. Milk cows with calves can be tricky. A good milk cow is worth vetting. All our Herefords are in the barn. NH still under a blanket of snow and ice here. I see your grass and wishing for spring to start showing….
P.S.- A belated Happy Birthday Ben!
Hope Ben had a great Birthday!
Happy belated birthday, Ben! 🙂
Where is the Great Dane? I haven't seen him on the farm in South Carolina. Last time I saw him was in Arkansas.
Happy birthday, Ben!!!! Happy early Birthday Toby, Noah and Jess!!! Our families are all in May..lol
Wish everyone a very happy, safe and blessed birthday! Mine was the 8th. 63 yr old granny! God Bless you all!
March is a busy month over here too! Happy birthday to all the boys!

Happy Birthday Benjamin! Also, I'm just getting into sourdough and I'd love the recipe for that pizza crust you were talking about 🙂
seeing ben gives me hope because my son (almost 4) looks and acts so much like him and it's so hard watching them grow up but ben being 7 now and still so darn adorable and sweet gave me hope that mine still has some time to be adorable too. 🙂
Happy Birthday Ben
HappyBirthday Ben happy 7 year old
If Ben is sharing March 9 as a birthday, I hope he gets two front teeth so he can eat corn on the cob. He is 7 and I have double 7 as my birthday. Sending love from South Louisiana. #PressOnRegardless.
Oh my goodness! That is BEAUTIFUL sourdough bread! You definitely have sourdough bread making mastered! I am starting a new batch of start as soon as my cultures come from Otis. (I got sick and and my start I had was sadly neglected and had to be thrown out!) I took your advise from a previous post and ordered one from Otis. I am looking forward to making bread again! Take care and God bless you!
Happy Birthday Ben and Jess!!
It is amazing to hear you talk about that “Mama instinct” because SO MANY mothers simply don’t have it! It astonishes me how many can’t discern a fever or know that to leave it alone unless it is excessively high because it is how the body fights illness and builds immunity. Many I know run to the doctor for a sore throat!
Another thing that is great to hear is how you steward your animals and money. I know a family who had a very, very elderly little dog. They are on a very fixed income and live hand to mouth. Yet, they spent $400/month on this dog and wanted people to give them donations. Our animals are important, but sometimes you have to let them go, partly cause of cost but it is also selfish to prolong the suffering!
We have a similar store near us. We love it.
For my moms 57th birthday this year she would love love love to come see the baby goats!! She’s always wanted to drink fresh raw milk!! We live a couple hours away from you guys!! She has been following your journey for several years now and was so so excited to find out you guys were moving to South Carolina!! She doesn’t know I’m commenting to you, but I’d love to be able to surprise her with a trip to your farm!!! Her birthday is March 19!! I pray you will get back to me to make her birthday a very happy surprise!! Also my 6yo and 3yo would absolutely love to see the babies!!!
