Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

I would love to know where Will got the pots from. Those are just what I’m looking to find for my leggy tomato plants.
If you don't plan pecan trees you are missing out. My parents planted pecan trees the first year in the house. We get as much as 300 plus pounds a year from one tree. Midlands SC
Those chestnuts were so interesting, never heard of doing that before.
Always feel like you’re swimming. Georgia is the same way. Just wait until it gets hot, then you’ll feel like you’re swimming in boiling water.
I have Meyer lemons that grow in pots at my house. I put them in the greenhouse when it gets too cold. I was able to root a bunch of plants from the original tree and have given several away. Zone 8
Figs tend to sucker quite a lot. Get rid of the suckers, put a little more soil over the root area.
Try making kumquat marmalade next year.
Hi Jess, I've started black walnuts and black locust from seed. Both are extremely easy to grow, fast growing and walnut is beautiful wood if you are patient. Same for butternut. I love trees and you certainly have the acreage. Your farm is becoming more beautiful with every video.
I've always heard that the only lemon we can grow in 9a is the [Improved] Meyer Lemon. No one sells Eureka or Hardy Lemon. Even the Meyer Lemon has to be protected below 27 degF.
We had a kumquat tree growing on our campus when I was in college, just a few feet from our building. Across from the olive tree. Within a few days of it ripening, the bottom would be picked clean by students waiting for class lol
Theres Lady girl!!!
OMG, a calamondin! We had a large tree in our back yard in Miami. They make the absolute best marmalade ever…and I’m so envious! I miss it so much! Way to go, Jess!❤️❤️
I’m so excited to follow your citrus journey! I have 15, in pots, up here in Ohio. They go outside in Spring, and come back in before first frost. Yes, grow lights are a huge help. Oh, and I make marmalade with my little calamondin fruits. It’s so good that way!
The lemons and limes are not as hardy as you were told. Please plan to provide protection. Tent, don't wrap. You need the warmth from the soil rising into the canopy.
Is property really expensive in South Carolina?
You need to go find a guy called “millennial Gardner.” He’s in SC, but I don’t remember where, but he just recently did a detailed video on his citrus trees growing in his yard, naming varieties and going into serious detail about them. It was really cool.
I’ll go see if I can find the particular one I’m talking about and add it as a reply here because he has a few citrus videos.
I doubt Jess will read this, but hope maybe Jeremiah does!
Loved it Jess – Go Fish with your Brother xx Cheers Denise- Australia
Are they for the pigs or as a food source?
Roots before Fruits! Got it!
We call that calamansi it's mini citrus with sour sweet. We used for steak.
Calamondin make great jam or marmalade.
.
Hey hey Jess! Loving all your videos! have you seen David the Goods grocery row gardens? Combining small fruit trees with perennial and annual plants in ? Thanks so much.
I have an older Naval Orange tree in the back yard. Thicker skin, easier to peel and seedless. Some get the size of softballs.
Where did you get those pots for the chestnuts I've been looking for some
oh man.. try to get a Meyer's lemon! so much tastier than Eureka! One of its parents is a madarin.. best cooking and eating lemon ever!! same hardiness…
