Despite a cold month, mid April means that spring has sprung on our veggie and flower farm. With the tulips close to opening, daffodils and hellebores putting on a show, and the scent of cherry blossoms filling the air, its easy to imagine all the potential the first signs of green are announcing for the year to come. I hope you enjoy an April visit to the gardens!

I use tomato plants for filler in my flowers so plant those extra!

This year we tried eating the kale flower shoots, roasted with olive oil. They're Really good. I know you want the flowers, but if you have extra kale plants.

Around here, witchhazel is the earliest things to bloom.
I have a ton of helleborous & daffodils. My tulips rarely act like perennials.

Tulips need bonemeal & blood meal.
I wish peonies were good cutflower. They are pretty but don't last long in a vase.
They are short because of water I believe they need most of there water three to four weeks before they are going to flower to put on there growth so maybe if you water them next year a couple of times before they are going to flower in that period and then hopefully that will help in getting the longer stems. I usually go out and water mine twice and I’ve not had this problem since. I’m just thinking it’s worth a try at least if it makes life easier for when you bunch them. (Ps I’m not a flower farm but I thought I’d share as it fixed my problem when I had this happening with mine)
Today is the first day it truly feels like spring to me here in Nova Scotia… Grass is turning green, some plants are waking up and peeking out from the ground, and the air feels nice.. we had rain showers earlier and it wasn't even freezing cold, for once. 🙂
I feel like spring in a cold climate is two things at once. It makes us busy as hell because everything needs to get done… But at the same time there's a lot of just waiting for things to warm up/wake up. How to manage that huge swing??
What a beautiful sight, looks like you made it. Those tulip beds are a dream, well done can't wait to see the bouquets. The lilies creep, then leap, then even more flowers years after.
