Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Question: Does Gabe react to the missing goats at all? Now that they aren't there anymore. I saw him in the video and I caught myself thinking, "I wonder how Gabe is feeling?". ❤❤❤

  2. For a shearer, check with Rachel, and shearingalpaca.com. She schedules for several crews that travel the country. Kuno will be in Kentucky and Tennessee around the 21st. Maybe he can swing that way. You can also ask for east coast shearers on the Llama Alpaca Health and Care FB site. If you do it yourself, there are specific combs and cutters for alpacas, different than those used for sheep. Until you shear, cool them by hosing down their bellies. Don't wet their backs. They dissipate their heat through their chest. Getting their backs wet will trap the heat in. You can also put out soaker hoses or wet the ground in the shade for them. Electrolytes are important in this heat.

  3. Jess it was the right time for you to release the goats otherwise you wouldn't have done it. I thinks also you are so responsible having your Barn Cats desexed as cats can become very feral & overrun everything – wish some of our neighbors over here were that responsible.

  4. I’m happy you were able to find good homes for all of your goats! It sounds like you have a solid view of what you need to do in order to move forward in the best way and I’m so thankful you share that with us for inspiration!

  5. For shearing, try contacting Right Choice Shearing. Their youtube channel is Right Choice Shearing. These ladies travel around to different farms all over shearing sheep, alpacas, lamas etc. They are excellent and always looking to the animals comfort. If they are booked and very well maybe, maybe they know of someone in your area whom you can try.

  6. Thank you for modeling maturity in the decision with the goats. Sometimes the best choice is the difficult one and it is just fine to be both happy and sad at the same time.

  7. Oh my gosh…bittersweet it right. I saw the girls going and got all teary eyed. Then that goat wrangling…dang that Amanda is a beast!
I do love that you have the Mothers blessing instead of a baby shower with games. We do a combo thing with the ladies here. Maybe one or two games and the rest is prayer fellowship and a delight sharing of something scrumptious.

  8. Makes me sad, especially Nestle. I understand why you had to make the decision. I'm glad they went to a home of someone you know and that you will get to see them in videos.

  9. Goats can be high maintenance. I like them too but I was actually never more relieved to sell my goats, they were the most troublesome thing I ever tried on my farm. I just didn't have the setup for temperamental Boers.
