VIDEO: New Residents in the Garden (and some garden updates) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Horrible spring/summer garden season here in Texas with the drought. I'm on a well, too, but I couldn't run it all the time. My alpacas needed their water sprinklers more, to stay cool. They aree set to go off every 4 hours. At least they also kept a little of the grass alive around the barn, too. Working on a cattle panel greenhouse to hopefully carry over some tomatoes and peppers. Have some raised beds done, but plan on 3 more. Sweet potatoes look great and fall climbing beans are up. Next up are broccoli starts. Moon is still rising, so chinese cabbage and lettuce are next. Will wait till after full moon for carrots, beets, and radishes. Here, onions and garlic go in the first part of November. I have been using netting to keep the free-range chickens out of the garden, but have decided to just fence it in. Most are too heavy to fly over a fence, and I'll be using welded wire 2×4, which is flimsier, and they have trouble balancing on it.

  2. There's a lot to be said for just sitting back and watching your chickens be chickens! Absolutely no need to be sorrowful for taking the break that your Lord has demanded you do. Sometimes He gives us maladies in order to make us rest from the busyness we think we must accomplish. I've been worried that this would happen to you Jess. Yo know full well that what you want to do, and what He wants you to do may be two different things. Seek first…. you know the rest. Love from Oregon.

  3. Cabbage freezes really well…we chop it and freeze it and then make it into lazy cabbage rolls that we can just toss in the oven for a quick supper.
We freeze them whole as well ..take out the core and wrap well and freeze…then thaw and make cabbage rolls.

  4. Love that Miah jumped in and took over to take care of Jess. Garden is beautiful and the chickens are lucky to live 9n the farm with y'all. Love the idea of the automatic door. Do you have a link to the one you used? I've tried to find it but no luck. ,❤️

  5. Sitting in the garden watching the chickens live their best lives sounds like a wonderful, meditative way to spend time. Glad you're feeling better! Hopefully the eczema won't be an issue in the colder weather.

  6. beets. that is going to be my focus moving forward. I will be juicing and fermenting not canning. but than do can well the price per lbs per square foot pure labor intensity seems to make the most since my family eats more carrots but carrots are typically cheap but there is an onion shortage so I would say way over plant onions as friends and family might need onions because there are global shortages and that could really help.

  7. I would plant more root crops for yourself and more plants for the chickens. Seed is cheap at Dollar Seed. Maybe more cheap than chicken feed. ';D

  8. I don't know if you've tried it, but a good oil for inflammation and other skin conditions like eczema is common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis). It might help ease your suffering. If you can't get it over there and want to try it, let me know.

  9. Hey Jess ,Glad to hear your feeling a pinch better , watching you roam around the garden , I realized you do a lot of touching of the plants… I know you have deep plant love , but you should stop it for now and wait for you skin to feel better. God Bless ..

  10. We installed the same door on our chicken coop, after watching one of your previous videos. It is so great! We have ours on sun up to sun down and glad that I don't have to get up early to open, and not worry about closing it at night.
