VIDEO: Planting the Fall Garden after the storm | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Violas and pansies are edible flowers. I am still trying to get rhubarb to grow for me. Thankful you missed the storm. I watched it track across SC since I have family in various areas there and it looked like ya'll had a rough time, glad the radar was wrong.

  2. Jess, Your HELLO FALL blog was enticing and captivating. I know you have had health struggles this year. That was my case last year. Fall is a time for the garden to rest or become slow growing or dormant. Sometimes we are forced to rest when circumstances arise. It is a nod of the cycle of life and reminder of how wonderful and needed the seasons are. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful expression on paper.

  3. I am glad Ian missed y’all, but still gave the garden a good soaking. That is what I call a blessing!
Your little frog friend is adorable. I love frogs. As a teenager, I was in a mild hurricane in Florida. In the days after the storm we had about 5 different kinds of frogs that were mating. In the postage stamp size front yard, I counted 32 pairs of frogs. They were so loud, that you literally could not hear yourself think. It was so much fun!!!

  4. Hello Jess So glad You were spared the wrath of Ian. Sounds like a movie title. This was a real nice video today. I have been following for a very long time and never said this before but today I think it is appropriate. I thought you looked very nice, clam, relaxed, I loved what you were wearing and you looked so much like you used to. I think that maybe you are finishing some parts of the farm and now you can take a deep breath and be more of yourself. Go to town buy what you want come home and plant it just like that. You had the best smile talking about the rhubarb and Miah's nana. Your whole face was very animated it was so fun to see. I hope God continues to bless You and everyone that is there on the farm in any capacity. Take care be safe Steven

  5. Hi Jess, rhubarb does well in Sydney Australia. Although during a > 40C few days the rhubarb gave up. But 90% of the years my rhubarb grows and thrives.
Post Ian, glad you and your property is fine. Sorry and best wishes for all those who were not so fortunate.

  6. I didnt have success with Rubarb either. I planted 2 different varieties. The ine pretty much died & the stems were falling off. I think both had bug damage of some type. Def bug eating. I had it under shade cloth but no go. I'm gonna try moving it to a more shaded area. I'm in St Louis MO. What could be interplanted with Rhubarb to keep the bugs away?

  7. Yes. When I saw your video the other day- I prayed that your farm was untouched and you’re business stands tall. Won’t he do it ❤ glad y’all are safe

  8. Praise the Lord from whom all blessings flow. Pretty cool watching you plant in raised beds again. Reminds me of another farm I used to follow. he he he God bless your homestead.

  9. So glad your family and farm was spared the worst of the storm. I was praying for you. God has answered our prayers and blessed you. Thank you for updating us.

  10. I really want to thank you for talking about your zone. I killed a bunch of plants last year because I listened to a Canadian on how to keep the plants alive over winter. It wasn't until the spring when everything died that I realised what a difference zones make. Something that can winterise in zone 7 will not survive in zone 3. Now I really pat attention to zones and research each plant to determine if it can make it through the winter.

  11. So glad to hear that you guys were spared by the storm, we were as well here west of Atlanta GA. We got no rain at all so I will be out watering tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.
