  1. We are mad here on Van Island…nice to freezing a few days ago then snow last evening and on off little bits today. Didn't get any bulbs planted either ugh. the hummingbirds are desperate for nectar already

  2. Straw, mulch FAST to prevent the ground from freezing too much and can you have a decoy scrap bulby area for the voles? Light a few bon fires along the planting area, let it die down and warm up the ground hahaha

  3. Love you guys and I'm glad you're staying warm! I have my bulbs in the fridge to pre-chill them! Don't forget the used cat litter trick to get rid of voles (put it in their tunnels — wherever you see their dirt mounds).

  4. Can you rent an auger to drill holes in the ground to plant the peonies? You could do the same for the daffodils . . . if your holes are close enough then they become a trench!

  5. Forgot to mention that I've changed back from Chickadee Flower Farm – Jill to Thingys-Jill. I think you will always have more to do than time in which to do it. The important thing is you are doing it and doing it well (even if you think you aren't!). This was your first full year of just flower farming. I think you've been a phenomenal success. Best of luck with your Christmas show! I'm doing one on December 3rd.

  6. I’m laughing listening to you two because I’m in the same boat, albeit on a small scale. We finished planting shrubs and laying mulch on a new flower bed as the snow, and night were falling on Thursday. I had planted my last few tulips that morning. All of the leaves are still on our trees also… flowers everywhere. I managed to dig out my dahlias after the first frost but couldn’t get the cannas out of our pots. I think at this point they are done. Unbelievable that we got this heavy snow and extended freezing temperatures so darned early. Drats!!!

  7. Maybe it is warmer inside a green house, so you can put the daffodils there now and move them in the spring? Or you could hire a stronger machine (with a driver) or an auger, that can dig out the fence line for you? Is it really hard frozen deep already, or just the surface?

  8. Our Alaskan blast of cold air got ya! We were still summer two weeks ago and then it cleared off and the bottom fell out of the thermometer! Got my bulbs in just in the nick of time! Good luck planting in the snow… brrr!
