Let’s start at the very beginning; a very good place to start. When you read you begin with ABC, when you GROW you begin with sowing a SEED!
When and how you sow seeds makes all the difference to how strong and healthy your crops will be.
Ben’s top seed-starting tips will set your growing season on the road to success. So let’s get going and let’s get SOWING!

Very informative video. All details clearly explained. Thanks.
which are the best grow lights to buy for seed growing
I am new to your channel. I am thinking about what vegetables to grow this year.
I have a small garden and last year had a terrible time with slugs. Every day I would pick off 5 -7 slugs a day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Dont use peet? thats like saying dont drive a car because it produces emissions.
Hi Ben!
Truth to tell, here in central Florida I can direct sow year 'round.
That said, I always learn something in every one of your videos;
and if my own enthusiasm for gardening had a voice it would be yours!
Cheers!
6:20 Popsicle sticks are a great alternative to plastic markers, you can buy them in bulk (very cheap), re-use them and then compost them, definitely better than creating more plastic pollution.
So what does it mean if my pot is sitting the water for an hr and there's still dry soil on top?
I love your greenhouse
Good man
Good video, I enjoyed it.. Where ( on online) could you buy the best seeds that aren't tainted from GMOs, and if you have to many seeds and don't use them all, how can you store them for the next year, (Vacuum seal , freeze ?)
Ben, you are a national treasure. Nay, a global treasure! Not only are your videos incredibly clear, educational, and accessible, you also radiate such a genuine warmth. It’s like the very best of the Great British Bake Off, but for gardening. Thank you!
Ben, just a quick question about seed starting mix. Yours looks like it already has some moisture in it. Should you moisten the mix before loading your plug trays? It's hard to get water into it if it's dry…. and you risk washing away your seedlings. I've seen recommendations for both ways…what are your thoughts?
No better sight! Seedlings remind me that Spring is just around the corner;) I have started a few of my seedlings: peppers, collards, luffa, sunflowers and beans.
Hey Ben. 🙂 Could i ask – Do you make your own compost at all? Do you think the panic in the compost industry means we should all be relying on and ergo refining our own composting techniques more urgently?
What was the music playing in the background, please?
Lots of good advice. But, you planted in Dry soil… not cool. And re: Peat > that's a bit over the top.
Thanks Ben, especially for saying to label because "it's so easy to forget". I thought it was just me getting dementia, haha. Cheers
Have always had a dream for my own veg plot. I had low confidence as any success was short lived and didn’t come to fruition. Was confused in how and what to start with . After searching online, for advice, I could relate to found your videos calm and easy to understand . all my questions were answered I was too embarrassed to ask. Thank you for not over complicating the beauty of growing my own veg .
I’m interested in your grow light. What exactly is this ? Does an led white light do the job? Thor bars remind me of sunbed tubes, so are there various rays or lumens that matter? Also, do these grow lights cost a lot of electricity to run?
How long do you think on average it takes to get the seedling to be large enough to plant outside
growlights for "veg" seeds.
ok stoners 🙂
no but really… i like the eco systems but not sure if the carbon-bolic but maybe progressonazis are progrmmed. Gs anyway mate
I used peat-free compost a few years ago to grow my potatoes. The harvest was very poor. So I used peat compost the second year and they were 50% better.
Can I just use last year's soil to plant the seedlings in plug trays?
