Composting is the gardener’s way of recycling old plant material into rich, soil-nourishing compost. Plants love it!
Wooden pallets are often free to source and are the perfect size for making a large compost bin.
In this short video we demonstrate how to make a simple but effective compost bin, step-by-step, from pallets.

I have some pallets with red EP markings and what looks like a red rooster symbol. Does anyone know if this is safe to use?
This is a fantastic video! Really informative and demonstrates clearly.
Totally confident to build my own now!
Well done mate. Watched a few videos and yours is the best. I will build mine today. Cheers
You need a impact drill.
Just taken over my first ever allotment plot. Def going to do this. New allotments 19 in total.
YEA.
All looks very easy but how do you transport the pallets to your place. Not possible with an average car. A 3 bin system which I am looking at needs 10 pallets. So then you are looking at pallet companies that deliver or hiring a pick up van. Then you cant be sure they are of the right standards re treatments. Then you think sod it buy a large flat pack 3 bin timber system that costs £400-700 with delivery.
Step by step directions would be nice addition to your post
This is fantastic! Excited to get started… one question, should I have some sort of cover on top? Even if it’s a just a tarp?
Best compost build I’ve seen. Thank you for a very simple and inexpensive way to make compost
I’m thinking of making a rectangle enclosure with cinderblocks for sticks and yard waste against the fence. Thoughts?
simply fantastic; thank you, mate.
I’d suggest the chicken wire in the inside to stop the compost sitting in the pallet frame and rotting it out.
Fantastic! Thank you!
Noone never mention s the fact it rains most days in the UK and Ireland and how this affects the process
Great video. I want to send you a cordless impact driver. Lol
3:05 your hammer technique is suspect…
This is my favourite compost bin design after watching several tutorials. I'm going to try it on my allotment, thank you! My only criticism is at the beginning you said you need certain supplies, but as the tutorial went on it turned out more supplies were needed that weren't originally listed so I kept having to stop the video and check the total supplies needed. A list in the description would be great.
How should i layer the compost? Im a bit lost lol.
You used simple zinc plated corner brackets though. They will rust out submerged in the compost before you even get your first batch of compost. You need to get exterior grade triple-dipped galvanized brackets and screws. They are significantly more expensive but will actually last.
Hey GrowVeg I'm interested in making a compost bin like this but I worried about the wood rotting. Have you had issues with rotting wood in the past? What would you say the lifespan is of a compost bin like this.
How long will this last?
During the bin-men strike in Edinburgh I started a small wormery made from two old washing up bowls I found. I asked for composting worms on Nextdoor and a kind lady shared some with me. However, we create too much fruit and veg waste (peelings, skin, cores etc) so I want to create a proper compost heap like this. Thanks for the tips on the type of pallet to look out for. I hadn’t thought of that.
Great video..very clear instructions.. Having just acquired an allotment this is just what I need. Will make a compost bin soon.
I´ve now got my 4 pallets and I think, having received umpteen different pieces of advice from well-meaning gardening friends, that I´m going to have a go at this project. Thank you!
Hi Ben, love your videos ! Lately there have been someone else posting videos with your face and title of growveg. Is this someone you know? Or an imposter? Keep up the good work. Sandy in Canada
Woodglut has very good and accurate woodworking plans.
very excited about this design, though i am going to use wooden stakes inside the pallets. I couldnt source the proplex from other pallet compost bin designs.
