  2. I sell garden starts each spring and know about the cotyledons. They, a majority of the time will turn yellow, dry up and fall off. Customers who buy my plants will say, “Oh those plants look like they are starting to die.” So I have to give them a quick biology lesson. After the true leaves emerge, I go ahead and pinch off the cotyledons. You said that they continue to provide nutrition to the seedling even though the plants true leaves are growing. Should I not be pinching off the cotyledon especially if it is still green?

  3. While trying to develop a green thumb, I've watched many YouTube videos and read many articles. A common trend emerged: the articles would often mention cotyledons by name, but the videos didn't. Having read the word countless times but never having heard it, I grew concerned that I was pronouncing it wrong in my head. Thank you for conforming that yes, I was pronouncing it wrong in my head. I thought they were called "coh-TILL-uh-dons", with emphasis on the second syllable and very loosely rhyming with "old Cinnabons". Even though it was only in my head, there's always the risk of saying it out loud in the presence of someone who knows better. I was way off, so that would have been a little embarrassing.

I've currently got a sage seedling with three cotyledons and its first set of three true leaves. I'm eager to see if it keeps growing that way.
