I begin my winter project with part 1 of how I built a quick, simple and inexpensive hoop house out of cattle panels. This hoop house will provide protection from the cold so I can grow warm weather veggies all winter long.

I can't wait to see it working for you. I would recommend getting some water jugs ready. If you have a cold spell, the water jugs will absorb heat during the day and release it at night. Put them inches from your younger plants to protect them. 😉
Very interesting. So far I've only seen people use PVC or electrical conduit to make these.
I will be using cattle panels to make Gorilla cages for my tomatoes, and for a trellis for the cucumbers and summer squash. How hard is it to roll the panels to fit in a vehicle? Home Depot rents a nice flatbed pickup for around $20/hr and Tractor Supply is only 15 minutes away. I do have heavy duty bolt cutters so I could cut to size before loading them. My hoop house will be made with PVC so I can quickly take it down in late May.

wire cutter to remove that bottom most horizontal wire. that provides you a longer prong to put into the ground. thusly lessing the dependence of the smashed 🙂 U nails.

How much do those cattle panels cost ? Looks like a cool way to build a green house. I built a little mini hoop house with pvc pipe and clipps.
Growing summer crops in winter is a mistake as all the experienced gardeners I have seen so far who do winter gardening in zone 5 climate say the key is to use cold loving crops like spinach, kale, carrots, and other greens. During the night the temperature will be almost the same temp as outside and tomatoes will not make it.

+CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY I know this video is older. So, I hope you see my comment. I had to come back and watch HOW you got those cattle panels HOME. When you guys rolled it up, WHAT did you attach it with? Zip ties or something stronger. I'm in a truck and I think I may have to roll it up more. Any advice is appreciated.
What is the gauge and dimensions of your cattle panel? Would this work for an 8X12 area? or can you somehow join the panels to make them longer if needed?
Wow I wish I could do this, because it looks easy enough. But Im a renter and although theres enough space, my landlord wont go for it.
noticed that you had regular plastic. it will barely last 6 months. I know because that was all i could find when I built mine. All I could find was a huge roll of the regular plastic so I replaced every march for 4 years. This year I am getting greenhouse rated plastic so I do not have to replace every year and also so I can put it on earlier in the year to get plants started earlier. going to try a compost pile heat method on one end of the greenhouse and also get mine sealed up better. I not a very good carpenter LOL.

Ok for you folks that do not have a large suv
If you have a car with bars on the roof. And it doesn’t have the cross bars. Go to the lumber yard. Buy some 1”x ? To fit across the car roof. Tie using a figure 8 pattern the the support bars.
Now you have cross bars on your roof.
Ok from there buy 2 or 3 2x4x12-16 feet in length. Figure eight them as well or screw them to the wooden cross bars.
Now go get those wire panels. Remember you needed the wood anyway.

2006, I made first structure out of plastic sandwiched between two concrete mesh panels, I thought I was on to something, no one else did. So found it very useful, cattle panels, also. I am noted for other inventions, no one can deny.
How wide is that greenhouse?
Gets Guys, not to be critical, but in an attempt to be helpful, you can use screws to attach to wood. Find a galvanized or stainless washer and screw at a wire connection. Staples actually could pull out and I usually hit my finger with hammer. I have built about 200 of these a while back. I'm in a new area, southeast Texas, and fire ants and rain combine so that raised are detrimental. I'm now going to grow in four 55 gallon drums and cut a slot for cattle panels to sit on. Use another one 1 foot taller for greenhouse. Heat and but relief. shade cloth or plastic sheathing on top, outside.
