I got my book today and it is beautiful! I have been flower gardening for at least 30 years +. After starting to watch You tube since covid lockouts, your channel was the first and you and your family got me hooked. You have inspired us to get serious with veggie and Kajari (ha), can hardly wait for that! We are 80 & 84, not in good health but each day when the weather is agreeable, we are out. I garden on a walker. Lol
You have inspired us in many ways. Now, I am ready to have some cornbread and milk and read my book.

7A here, just sowed carrots, lettuce, turnips, and transferred some hardened off brassicas this week! I've got frost cloth over my beds, and I tuck them in every night it's going to be below freezing Lol

Middle TN, planted my onions at about the same time you did. We ended up with a deep freeze and a lot of snow and ice. Walking the garden yesterday all of my onions seem to be green and thriving. I was thrilled to see it. Sometimes the best learning is from just trying things and seeing what happens.

Same here with March. My brother is the 12th. Then HIS son is the 12th…nephew is the 14th and husband the 23rd! whew 🙂 Direct Sowing is def the way to go, lots to be planted B4 last frost! 🙂
The main thing to remember is don't risk anything you can't afford to lose. In the old days people were more cautious because if they suffered a loss it could mean their death.

Yes! We got that storm here in TN- messed up my chicken coop 🙁 But now it has a new pretty metal roof 🙂
Today, in zone 5, in windy 35 degrees F, I sowed peas, dill, yellow heart winter choy, a pinch of carrot, arugula and old spinach seeds. The worms are active when a shovel full of dirt is turned so I figured, they know better than me. I did cover the peas with plastic clam shells I saved from Costco croissants, because the squirrels like to dig up my seeds and snack, and now I’m hoping they’ll help the seeds germinate too. Our average last frost date is 5/15, and last year I couldn’t put my tomatoes/cucumbers/squash out until the second week in June.
BUT! To your point about how things sometimes just survive:
Last summer I found a tiny wild garlic in a partial-shade bed I excavated to build a hugelkulture mound. No one sowed it, I don’t know how it got there. But in the fall, I sowed the 6 tiny cloves into the edge of the mustard I grew on the mound. The same week squirrels went on a digging rampage where the garlic was sown. I was sure they were ruined, so I didn’t take care when harvesting the mustard in November. Then we had a really cold deep freeze with -10F for many consecutive days and weeks of 4 feet of snow cover over everything. But last week, lo and behold, garlic shoots popped out where I sowed the tiny cloves. 4 out of 6 survived all that. I’m hoping these grow bigger than the 1-inch mother I got them from.
There’s snow forecasted tomorrow, but the lows are right at 32F for the next week so I’m hopeful. I’m hoping the snow waters the seeds I sowed today.
do you mulch over seeds when direct sowing or not?
