  1. LED still need to hang very close to your crops which with micros could be just 2 inches. And germinating crops you want to use mainly the blue end of the spectrum (6500K) rather than red (2100k) which is for the bloom phase.

  2. Hey Curtis I had a few more questions,
    1. How many flats of microgreen flats do you suggest I use in my first year of business, for a city of 13'000.
    2. Where do you get your microgreen seeds, I've looked on west coast seeds, and they don't sell radish shoots. I am looking for well priced pea, sunflower, and radish shoots for my first year but I feel inspired by your book and feel I will feel more successful knowing im using a good brand tested, and used by you.
    3. And also I'm having trouble finding any microgreen flats. I've come to the conclusion that I don't have a length,by width, by height, in mind, I also don't know whether or not to have drainage holes, your book actually doesn't talk about this, so I thought I would ask where you get them, what size specs they are, and whether or not they have drainage holes in them.

Sorry actually in your book you do say they are 1 inch deep for everything except sunflower, for sunflower you use two inch deep flats.

Curtis, the 300w LED light is still drawing 300w of power. The only difference is you are getting more lumens output(and different spectrum) from that 300w of power than you would from say a 300w T8 fixture. Both are still drawing 300w though 😉 The efficiency comes from comparing a 300w LED to say, a 500w T8, where you can get similar results.

  4. You should get Newlux lighting to sponsor you. They have some awesome looking water cooled LED lights with super high power outputs. Also, LED lights usually only consume half of their stated power. Especially the china lights use 3 or 5W LED chips, but only power them at 1/2 power. This means your 300W light probably only consumes 120-150W. You should connect it to a power meter to see. Using oversized LED chips is done to increase the lifespan of the fixture. It just seems most marketing departments can't resist the urge to tell you about the larger number…

  5. I was wondering what the bags you put lettuce in are called I don't need to know where you get them but I would like some info on what they are. Thanks, I love watching your videos☺

  6. definitely a timely vid with all the seed starting going on this time of year. I was looking at my analog timer and it had me wondering how much electricity it uses just by itself – wouldn't think much, but the numbers are confusing as hell. Couldn't tell if it was throughput supported or if it was wattage used. I Look forward to updates on the LED stuff. I'd rather watch your videos than study the physics and spectrum stuff.

  7. It looks like you removed your raised basil bed toward the windows, and added additional bench space for more micro green production? Shift in business and production, and more profitable use of greenhouse space?

Thank you for the farmers friend microgreen quick stand for quick-cut green's harvester video.

  8. I'm curious what kind of drone you use for your overview shots. Do you fly it? Love those shots – not so many in this vid, just the one at the end, but I've been curious to ask for a while now.

  9. Thanks for showing us your lights. It's a shame the shop lights don't have a proper reflector thing. If you upgrade I would do LED for sure, but it's probably not worth the cost until the current ones wear out.

  10. Just a thought Curtis. Power rates are lowest overnight. It would be cheaper to operate your lighting based on sunset being the end of your 16 hour period and programming the lighting to come one 16hrs before. Then you could just have a photocell over ride the lights once enough natural light was present.

  11. A note of caution to anyone looking to use more than one lamp for lighting … The cheap timers that are shown here and like others that are the same are not rated for a high energy usage, therefore when connecting more lights to a system be sure to swap this type of timer out for a unit which is called a contact relay timer which will protect your system from possible fire hazard because these cheap types of timers will heat up very quickly and with too much energy going through the timer will cause it to start a fire … a testament to so many people that have tried to grow indoors and end up burning their home down to the ground !!! … This I believe is a true safety issue and shouldn't be ignored for the sake of trying to save a few dollars/pounds.

  12. Now I don't feel so bad hearing you say you grew them in your kitchen. The garage gets too cold in the winter and I don't have T8s down there yet anyway, so yeah, I have been growing them in my kitchen under T8s.

  13. I am using 4' LED T5 lights and they are working pretty well for me. I ordered some off of Amazon and got 6 bulbs for $50. I think they are 6500k as far as the spectrum and are about 20 watts each. I am only using them for microgreens and seed starts so from what I've read that spectrum is good for vegetative growth. If you are wanting the LEDs to grow a plant to maturity it seems like a full spectrum LED light is the way to go. Awesome vid, thanks Curtis!
