Just an idea, but what if you had some way to wash the foam cups that were used for whatever, crush and crumble, and put in soil instead of perlite for drainage
And oops….i bought a million peat pellets to start my plants. All my tomators, beans, and lettuce came up quickly. But NONE of my peppers so far and there were 8 varietes, 280 starts…ughhh
I Live in Seattle, Wa. and start my tomatoes and peppers in EARLY JANUARY. Even the Carolina Reaper produces fruit.

17:39 I do the same thing with used plastic cups from coffee shops or restaurants! I might poke drainage holes in them and then use another cup to catch the water.
Hi Jess. Just watched your Seed Starting 101 video. It was great BTW! The Baccto Potting Mix you mentioned, did that come from Wal-Mart and which of their potting mixes is it. I looked them up and noticed they have several different types. I enjoy your videos. I too live in Zone 7b in Alabama, which is East Central Alabama, Anniston, AL to be specific. Thank you.
I found the cheapest option is to buy the ingredients separately in bulk and blending it yourself. I got like 5 cu ft worth of soil for $20.

Good morning! I try to use items that are not recyclable. I've used my wood burning tool to put holes in the bottom of yogurt cups for seedling cups and cottage cheese containers for transferring seedlings to. Both of those will wind up in the landfill but are perfect for multiple-year use for seed starting. I do recommend giving them a good wash from year to year. Also, the little dixie paper cups make great seed cups. You can remove the bottom of the cup then plant directly into the garden. The cup itself will help provide protection against critters/ grubs and will deteriorate into the garden. BTW… I'm in southcentral MO.. about 2 hrs east of the bootheel. Happy Gardening!

Where I live we have a "long" ish growing season (over 200 days) BUT the warm weather season is short and late. Temperatures often are still stuck in the 50s well into July and it doesn't truly change from "spring" weather to summer weather until August. This makes things that like heat to germinate really tricky (peppers, melons, etc), but we can grow broccoli nearly year round.

Can’t wait to see how y’all make the move to SC and rebuild your homestead. “I’m just a gardener” no you are amazing!! I’ve watched a handful of videos and I’ve learned so much! I’ve tried my hand at gardening for years and I’ve had really good harvests but I’ve had even more failures. Learning from you has me so excited for my garden this year and much more excited for next year’s growing season.

I loved watching your/Mia's trick on using plastic cups and also drilling drainage holes! This was my first year growing seedlings and the party cup trick was super helpful in keeping my costs manageable this first year. I tried both clear and the red generic brand cups from Walmart. Besides seeing green mold on the outside of my tomato plants in the clear cups, and our weather raining, raining, raining…and more raining all spring, my tomato seedlings grew too tall as they waited to be transplanted out, and the narrower base on the clear cups caused them to topple over more easily than the red cups.
As an additional tip, I asked my hubby to use Mia's amazing drill trick, and drill out a hole the size of my index finger so that I can push my seedlings out from the bottom.

I did alot of up-potting this spring, but enjoyed it thoroughly. Part of that is getting accustomed to my new home/space and what systems will work best for me.
The fellow who wrote the Weed Free Garden uses cups to start plants then he uses a bulb planter to dig the holes. He digs them all then lays out the plants gets down plants and he's all done. Easy peasy.

I swear your videos are the best
BTW, Styrofoam cups are banned in many states. DO NOT USE THEM. They contain Benzene and Styrene which are carcinogens. As well Styrene depletes the ozone layer. Worst of all you don’t need to drink out of them to be exposed. Exposure can come from simply touching them or breathing the vapors that leach out of them, primarily Benzene.
I originally found your channel when I saw your video with MurryMcMurrry. I have loved all of the educational gardening videos. My grandmother used to be a great gardener but was unable to teach me before she passed. I am so glad to have your assistance with my endeavor to continue her legacy. I even have some old seeds of hers that I am hoping to continue the lines of if I can get them to successfully grow!
