VIDEO: Extension cord maintenance rolling them up

I consider taking care of equipment to be a huge part of self sufficiency. Rolling up cords haphazardly can greatly reduce the life and efficiency. Here is how I roll them. There is just a little “twist” to the method. There is a very easy way to verify everything I claim in this video about how the cord. After use leave the cord plugged in then roll the “normal” way and watch how many twists the cord ends up with. Now roll it up my way while still plugged in and see what happens. Like I said. Roll it up however you decide. If your way works for you and your cords don’t develop perma-twists and don’t tangle that’s great. If you have problems then take a bit of time to learn this. I won’t do it any other way now.

  3. Very nice video…  I always enjoy teaching folks this technique.  One thing that you did not mention, however, is that you have to be very careful to never grab the 'wrong end' of the cable and run with it.  If you reach through the center and get the end from the other side of the coil, it's going to make an overhand knot for every two coils.  Sometime it's hard to tell which 'side' is which when it's been thrown about a bit.

it helps to tie a short piece of line, a foot or so long, on the male end, to tie the coil up tight with.  Never tie a knot in the cable itself.

I've coiled 300' long runs of multicore that was nearly two inches thick and weighing a pound a foot with this technique.

It is also nearly identically the way that you would coil a rope as well.
