Raise ducks and guineas they eat more bugs and need less feed, like goats can live on weeds and brush. Chickens actually will eat meat, greens, and bugs in nature. My hens would hunt little voles and pull them apart in a little circle of feathery velociraptors. Watch hens kill and eat a little snake and wonder why commercial agriculture feeds them vegetarian? Grain farmers are subsidized by the government which has skewed our food pyramid and our animals food consumption over the past 80 years or so.

1st question is how about pearl millet? Is it a good option for chicken feed? 2nd whst type of sorghum do you grow? Bicolor?

Update. Based on this video I planted some rows of sorghum. It grew great. Just before the harvest songbirds ate all the seed heads. Nothing left for the gardener. End of sorghum experiment.
I dont care how a seed can be so dead dry, then just suddenly burst into life like magic, seems like a bit of a miracle to me.

Have you managed to come across anything that could substitute rice?
I made a raised bed that I covered with half mulched goat manure and ended up getting a sorghum plant in the bed. It's not tall at all. It's ready to harvest and only 18" tall. A happy accident that I will save for next year.
Dude…Make sorghum sugar from the cane.
If you want to enhance nitrogen in the soil, plant vetch or some field peas.
You can even enhance the nutritional value of livestock feed by mixing a bit of the sorghum molasses in with it.
I've been interested in learning to forage and finding wild plants that are edible. Can't wait for the series
