Today I answer why I’m not gardening with wood chips this year, and go into detail of why I decided to make a change.
Thanks for the kind words and support 😁🐕❤️

I must say leaves work best for me.
What about termites with all that wood?
Because once it breaks down it makes a great place for growing weeds.
Wow, your carrots are a really deep orange!
Do you ever use a thin layer of grass clippings for annual mulch on veggie beds?
Quick question jersey boy. The wood mulch(bark) cant touch the plants… Is that correct or only certain plants.?
…termites love wood chips
Love the channel. Old rotted hay will still sprout seeds, even multiple years old.
Great vid! I use the back to Eden garden style and have had a lot of success with it. However I did run into some similar issues with my annual plants. I started brewing my compost teas for a shorter period and pulled all the mulch off this year. Every thing is back to Eden now:] Just piling up my mulch helped it break down and is now pretty much soil. One Love
I haven't heard that distinction before. It makes sense.
I love your channel and follow your process closely here in the PNW, which is more similar to your NJ environment than my previous SF Bay Area location. Thank you for helping me get back to gardening. I have a photograph of me wearing the Food Forest shirt I purchased (love it), standing in front of my beginning efforts.
Is there more danger of introducing pests when using rotted hay or leaves, and if so how could that be negated?
Thanks for the info, great video with a lot of concise delivery of useful info.
We JUST wood chipped our gardens this year, I haven't had to water my front for over a month…wow!
No wood chips got it.
How do you address yellow jackets? I had a nest of yellow jackets in my mulch and was stung multiple times. I am now leery of using mulch. I realize the benefits of using it for the plant life, but how do I balance the benefits with the fear that I am now experiencing due to the risk of being stung?
Thanks for explanation
I'm so glad you did this video. I've been watching every video I could find about mycorrhizal fungi. I'm new to gardening and everything I know has been learned from YouTube videos rather than personal experience but I had decided that fungi seems better for perennials and bacteria seems better for annuals. You're the only other person I've heard who addresses this idea. Love your videos! Energetic personality! Top notch information! And Tuck! By far the best YouTube gardener!
Wouldn't your mushroom compost still be fungal based?
WE THOUGHT HE SAID TEEEET OF THE FOREST AT FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!! WE HAD TO REWIND IT!!!!!!!!
Great gardening science class from James. Love his rational approaches and sharing his studies with us.
Very helpful video!
I have seen people talking about wood chips leeching the Nitrogen out of the soil. Is that an issue?
Amazing, Beautiful garden!!
wow that is amazing info! thank you!
James, watching your videos feels like attending a college level class. You include so much technical information and so much reasoning, and gardening philosophy. L.O.V.E.
Awesome show!
What an awesmoe dog hahaha
