VIDEO: Self Sufficiency is NOT Just Gardening its a Lifestyle

This video is about explaining self-sufficiency and how it relates to this channel and also me… I respond to a comment that questions why I don’t just do gardening videos and I explain the reasons for why the channel content is how it is. Cheers 🙂

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Hi Mark, Most people have a desire to be self sufficient, but most do not even know the first thing on how to become self sufficient. Me and my husband have become 90% independant from the grocery stores. We are Organic as much as possible, and we have gotten completely away from GMO foods. A lot of people think that gardening is too hard of work. Well yes its hard work but the peace of mind that being self sufficient brings with it makes it far more worth the work. I only wish that we could raise All! of the fruit and things which you do on your three acres, but our climate will not allow for Bananas, Oranges and other citrus fruits. We do well and are retired with enough income to feel free at last. We built a beautiful log home in Western Wyoming USA, and the cold, snow and Ice among other things forced us to step back and rethink what the hell we did to ourselves. So one day when my husband came home from work I just told him I'm leaving this Hell hole and moving back to Arkansas USA where I was born and raised. I thought he would stay in Wyoming but he said Okay. He and I are both happy that we did. I am going to add a Jersey Cow and Bull to our 10 acres and possibly a pair of hogs. We have goats but they are getting old and won't be around long. Don't pay attention to a lot of sarcastic people they are everywhere. I always say "Oh well I can't have everything!" Your friend Jessie from Arkansas USA

  2. I freaking love you. What a sincerely awesome person. Another part of self-sufficiency is sovereignty. Maturity. Responsibility (ability to respond). I love the info and the humor in your videos. But today I saw what's beneath, holding it all together. I have so much respect for you, Mark. Thank you so much for sharing your passion with us <3

  3. Chris is playing a shame blame fear game…. your are playing a passion intellectual love game…. this is at the root of the disconnect

  4. Good day Mark. I love your self sufficient way of life. I told my 89 year old father about you, and you are the first person to really impress this hard working Korean war veteran . Great respect for everything you do, including the way you care for your family. I do love a good family man. Keep on being yourself.

  5. My advice, if you want it, is to go deeper into raising poultry, fruit trees, gardening, and raising other animals. You could go more into prepping, and even cooking and preserving the food you produce. I would stay in that area, because that is what your viewers really love. Paul James used to fix up his own property, and make a show about each project. Then he deducted it all from his taxes. Brilliant! For example, redo and upgrade your hen house. I would also love to see shows about the birds and wildlife in your area. Walkabouts too! We only see birds like that in a pet store. The new stuff sounds very risky. Like I said, be yourself and we will eagerly watch you. But comedy is tricky and very hard to do well. I fear for you. Sincere best of luck to you Mark, and your family.

  6. One last thing. Yes, review everything you can. Companies will send you their products, and you can get sponsors. I think sponsors will help you to be self sufficient. And you are looking quite fit! Keep up the good work!

  7. Even if I was only here for the gardening videos I wouldn't unsubscribe if you posted other videos in-between, that is just stupid..
Its like a gaming Youtuber posting a vlog and everyone that ONLY want gaming unsubscribe.
I'm here for all of your content! <3
    I don't even have a garden. XD

  8. At the end of the day, nobody has to watch a video of yours they don't want to. In my opinion, providing diverse content is better than just sticking to the same videos all the time. Keep doing you mark!

  9. I've been watching you a lot lately, both because I want to learn more about gardening and self sufficiency, but also because I enjoy your personality, and your voice. Your voice is very soothing and nice to listen to while I'm doing other things, like gardening, playing games, going on walks and so on.

  10. Believe me when I say. Your Self-sufficient channel has improved significantly. You are reaching younger people who are starting their own Garden. I love this channel. I love Mark even though we never met YET! You get me coming back for more. Keep on the digging in.

  11. Don’t feed the trolls Mark. You will never be able to please everyone, sensible people will switch off if they don’t like your content. Other people who are desperate for attention will make spurious accusations in order to make themselves, somehow, important.
I have bought a home recently and I am planning my entire garden using your videos. I appreciate all the hard work you put into your content, I like the education and I really like the humour.
You and your family seem like kind souls and there will always be folks who want to rain on your parade…ignore them.

  12. Love your videos. They are very tasteful done. Good god they are so funny, you crack us up with your style, word choices, and the topics you bring to the channel. I will be honest that after watching many great YouTube shows from same content creators my mind will be bored and I would have to change the channel and content whether it is with your channel or not. But once in a while I will be back to watch your videos again for something that pique my interest, and every time I go back to your channel there is always something cool to watch. Thanks for the great content but also a great way of showing (I learned a lot) and you come through as a great person.
