VIDEO: Food Forest, A Functional Design

We aren’t just creating a garden when growing a food forest, rather we are creating an ecosystem. If we design it correctly we can have this system function to support us, while also supporting itself. This is sustianable food production.

  1. James, are you not concerned for squirrels or other critters coming to 'inspect' and disturb your seedling cups? I always have that problem. So I have to cover them, but then I need to keep them ventilated otherwise they would cook under the sun.

  2. Looking great James! Keep the inspiration, knowledge and overall experience going. Could watch it every day and always looking forward to hearing that intro! Thanks for all you do. God bless

  3. Thank you !!! I'm a loyal follower. I live in Knoxville TN ( zone 7 some say 6a) either way, I follow you because my trees are doing almost what yours are. They are just a little bit more opened than yours but I figured that what you can plant and harvest, so can I. My goal is to learn from your mistakes and I'm implementing your suggestions . This is the first year of my permaculture food forest. I started last year late but could not get wood chips even though I tried and tried. My utility company said that when trees fall on power lines they just leave them where they fall because I live in the mountains at the foot of the Smokeys. I have done the nest best thing and that is old hay and cardboard. Keep posting because I follow you daily !!!!!

  4. James. Your vids are awesome! Thank you for sharing. What are your thoughts on expelier (sorry im not sure about spelling) trees to minimize space and maximize harvest? Thanks again!

  5. Soooooo exciting to see how everything is coming along so well. Won't be long before every fruit tree is going to be in full bloom. I love Spring when everything comes back to life….. Great time of the year; lots of sunshine, no mosquitos or black flies, wonderful smell in the air, the birds are singing and nesting …. I just love it . 🙂

  6. Always fun to see! i Just saw the first life sign from my grape vine :-). I am trying to create a ball of green surrounding our balcony.
You are doing a great job with the videos. But i would not try to do daily thow. That sound to stressfull and gardens normally gro slow. Stick to 1-2 maximum 3 a week and study some more film and have fun with the editing in the mean time. Thanks!

  7. this is soo beautiful full of flowers i cant wait to see it full of leaves and life it is like a forest i wonder if it you breah life while in the middle of the plants. U re living the dream anything is possible ! very beautiful

  8. James, your enthusiasm is contagious. Your videos motivate me to do even more in my garden. You could move mountains. ~ Lisa

  9. Hey James! I heard you wrong, and I thought, New Jersey REALLY rocks! I thought you said the avocados were coming in strong. Lol, it was the apricots. Jersey still rocks, tho!

  10. Hi James- I would love to see a video where you explain and show how you plan the location of your annual crops each year. Maybe including a labeled map of the forest we can see. Do you do any soil testing just to make sure? Any crop rotation? Thanks!! Learning so much from your videos, I have a document full of notes about 5 pages long and I only just discovered your channel. I am slowly making my way through and enjoying every minute of it..
