When growing in small spaces, getting high yield crops out of small spaces is key. Interplanting, also known as intercropping (and in some circles companion planting, but that’s a subject for another video), is a fantastic way to squeeze more harvests out of the same space:
1. Consider planting ‘understory’ plants under your tall veggies like tomatoes, corn etc.
2. Also consider planting quick-season crops between long-season crops, so long as their root systems won’t disrupt growth too much.
3. Finally, consider ‘merging seasons’ by starting fall crops as the summer ones are finishing off, or throwing one last batch of spring crops in between your summer starts.

I have planted potatoes with an early crop of lettuce on top. The lettuce gets harvested by the time the potato plants get big.

I inter plant salads under my kales during the summer. I also start radishes next to my onions. I also grow flowers next to tomatoe plants. i grow spinach between my garlic aswell. I only grow in pots and even if my garlic will be a lil smaller… i get more bang for my buck.

Can you talk more about interplanting with tomatoes. I always do herbs and marigolds for pest prevention. Maybe some lettuce here and there. I have been cautious because i don't want to put heavy feeders with other heavy feeders. Would you mind giving some examples? Thank you for the videos!

I put lettuce and spinach i under my trellised tomatoes last year. I needed to spray the tomatoes with neem oil later on because of early blight and I had to pull the lettuce early so it wouldn’t get neemed. I am keeping this in mind now when mixing plants.

I love the idea of interplanting to protect the soil and having a “living mulch” :)! Having an “understory plant” below tomato plants is also a super cool idea! Do you have a list on your website of good interplanting matches? Carrots and beans- deep & climbing? Kale and tomatoes- winter & summer? Or maybe a numbered list video of the plants with shorter life spans so that they can be removed before the corn would need the nutrients in the soil to grow optimally?

Love the channel! This video was super helpful. What are some good examples of crops to interplant with tomatoes? I have some fairly large tomato plants that are producing but taking up a lot of room in very large raised beds. I love the idea of interplanting some of the fall crops. This is my first year so I'm not sure which ones would be good to go with tomatoes.
My goals in life shift more and more towards "i just want to be able to afford my own garden one day". I live in switzerland (small country and everything is expensive), so far i have managed to get an appartment with a balcony with raised beds which will have to be enough for the next few years, until i earn more money and can afford something with a garden. But at night i still dream about having a garden.
Hi, do you ever have any issues when closely interplanting? I've always wondered if interplanting crops closely would reduce size/yield/flavour etc due to each crop having to fight for the nutrients in the same space
