Why is this spice really $1000 per ounce, and is it justified? Levi will explain his reasoning for this very super expensive spice and why it has been the prized spice of many nations.

Hmm… I wonder if I can get a breadfruit tree to grow and fruit in Maine.
Thank you, I always wondered why it is so expensive.
Ok ok ok but is Levi single? Lol
I have grown saffron. Super easy
True but NOT TRUE at the same time. When I was in Iran years ago I was able to get a kilo of saffron for just over 500 bucks. Yes I knew people… The point is that it is all the middle people from Iran to you that really jack the price up.
I might try safflowers to grow. They say it is very similar to saffron.
We are trying it this year. A test batch. We live in a high arid desert. The hardest part of growing this it comes in a numb and 1 bulb grows one flower. I want to grow it and if it is scaled up try to talk with the high end restaurant about buying it.
I have contemplated growing saffron myself. It would be nice if Luke could do a growing guide for saffron.
I definitely want to try growing it someday. I have a growing list of things i want to try growing and can't grow it all so maybe next year I'll be able to fit it in!
This kind of video could benefit from footage at an actual growers site – and a dozen or so actual invoices to back up the price claims…?
I have been considering growing the crocus flowers for some time now. And I have already gone the next step and ordered them off Baker Creek so they will arrive in Sept. Of this year! So I'm super excited and will be preparing a bed just for them. I'm looking forward to growing my own one-of-a-kind expensive spice. Thank you for sharing this.
I started growing these last year. Don't have many, but they'll multiply quickly I hope.
I've not used mine yet from last fall… maybe I will soon
Well I know for a fact there a farm in quebec canada so it doesn't only growth in Mediterranean condition it only flower in a different month. So I be looking foward for MIgarderner to try it out. 😉
Love this guy!!! Great video, and no. I have never grown saffron crocus.
it sells out in my seed companies very fast. it would be fun and interesting to grow.
The Female part of a flower is the Pistil! The parts of a Pistil are the Ovary at the base, the Style or shaft from the ovary that goes up to the Stigma at the tip of the Pistil! All of the Saffron that I have seen that has not been ground is the shaft and the stigma, not just the stigma!
I would love to grow the saffron crocus. How do I get started?
Another great video Levi! Keep them coming
Well, no wonder it’s so expensive. Great video!
I'm growing it for the 1st time this year. I got about 9 bulbs from another member of the community garden I belong to. About every three years he digs up the flowers after harvesting the saffron and the bulbs will have multiplied to about 6 per plant. He started with a dozen bulbs and is up to over 50 bulbs in the past 3 years. Figure I'll get just enough for one use this 1st year. Planted them in October and with this mild TX winter they sprouted in Nov/Dec and have continued growing through two freezing spells.
I regularly but Spanish saffron for $70-80 per once from my supplier. Where on Earth are you getting your numbers from for cost. The title says $1000 per once then you open with $5000 a pound. Get a calculator
I would try to grow it if I had spare space. I'm really curious to know how it tastes
i would try
They grow in southern coastal BC, Canada, and are a fairly common naturalized spring bedding flower. Early spring here, so they're coming up now over the next few weeks. There's an autumnal flowering variety here as well.
I had some growing outside my old house, but I didn't know what it was and left it alone… 0_0…
You should do a saffron growing guide. They are growing it in Canada. I think u guys can do it. It's such a great spice. Perhaps your wife could do a lot of the work it shes big in the flowers no? Cheers mate.
Levi please use the correct verb….. really??? my ears hurt.
@0:40:
THESE ARE THE STIGMAS AND THAT (THOSE) IS (ARE) ONE OF THE FEMALE PARTS OF THE FLOWER, OK, AND
THESE RED STIGMAS IS (ARE) WHAT ACTUAL SAFFRON IS.
Or: THESE (that) ARE (is) THE STIGMAS(stigma) AND THAT IS ONE OF THE FEMLAE PARTS OF THE FLOWERS OK AND THESE(THE) RED STIGMAS(STIGMA) IS WHAT ACTUAL SAFFRON IS.
I mean it isn't rocket science. It's just correct English. If you're brain can figure out when to use a and an then u should be able to use singular and plural verbs correctly. I'm being for real my ears are bleeding now……..
OK I'm pretty sure i could program a roomba in C or assembly with a cam and some extras to harvest saffron effectively. Sorry last comment I've flooded this video. Super interesting for people that are thinking of growing saffron.
