What's cheap asbout this again?
I bought a 'fox light' that flashes lights at random intervals which apparently scares them. I havent tested it yet becauseI am also going to upgrade the pen similar to your suggestion but hopefully the combination of the two will prevent further fox attacks
Your house like a fam, I like this
Dogs, foxes and cats are our main predators, so this really really helps in our preparing for chickens
Excellent ideas thanks, any thoughts on bear proofing your coop?
Great tip. Have to fox proof a duck run into a big pond in a few days and that is a great idea.
Many thanks for taking the time to share brother.
I have chickens that I love so much
Me and my mom love them
We have 2 dogs (me and mom used to love them) that have killed 13 chickens all of wich were very loved
My dad and sister won’t get rid of the dog
Keep n mind that they continue to bust though the cages designed to keep a 80 lbs dog out
We hate the dog
They love them
We keep the dog cuz it makes them happy
Makes us sad
Good idea. I did something similar by burying a large piece of heavy duty building mesh (salvaged out of a skip) beneath a small stationary coop. Anything that tried to dig in there would have got a manicure! I did know a guy who said that the best fox deterrent was for the chicken owner to go and pee along the edge of the run each evening, but of course this is only practicable for guys … who need to have a bellyful of beer beforehand lol.
It just cracked me up when you let all your chickens out of the pen. A few of them were giving you “a piece of their chicken mind”!
fuck that dog.
Dogs in the country should be socialised around common farm animals. My two wouldn't dare attack chickens, ducks, geese etc. They're so well behaved that our local magpies no longer run away from them but instead will come over to see if I have any treats for them (I occasionally feed them feeder roaches that I breed for my tarantula). Mine sometimes forget themselves and chase sheep… But they stop when shouted at and have never laid teeth on anything.
Dogs, like it or not, sometimes escape. If you can't ensure 100% your dog won't escape, you should make sure it won't kill anyone's livestock.
woodprix is nice for that.
Chicken Dundee!
You should've left the dog in there and brought the owners over.
The sound of those ducks quacking is so soothing
I 100% feel you mate. I lost just 1 chicken and I was shattered. I did not expect to be as devastated as I was, I just felt so horrible and guilty I wasn't there to save her. I will never forget it and It has made me so much more vigilant. I now use tent pegs to secure the chicken wire a little better, it's not perfect but it's more than nothing (I'm still working on it, hence why I'm here)
My pen is big enough for them to be happy too but the reality is the fresh grass is outside the pen so I let them out daily. A Maremma dog would suit your needs.
you shouldnt handle the dog like that especially if it is not yours!
oh and we cant use wood because the mites get into the chickens and killed one
I think you should visit the Woodglut website if you want to do it yourself.
Really good and relevant cheap solution, where are you based at?
What's to stop them from digging under the gate?
If we have a fully wooden fenced yard but we are beside a road and do have a neighbour could we do thing on our side of the property line and bending it towards the center or our property to prevent them from coming up ?
Buy a german shepherd he will protect the chicken s from everything ay my dog protects the flock
