Today we go up to the plot and harvest the first ever crop of swedes or rutabaga. They did really considering it was the first attempt at growing them. If you are looking for a long storing brassica then these vegetables fit the bill, they do make a lovely mash as well.

Hi Adam, swedes look good, I have just harvested mine and also had a couple split, but mine are not smooth and round like yours I always seem to have deep grooves around the outside, I have tried different varieties but they all turn out the same, any ideas for the reason for this
Hi Adam, you have a decent crop of swedes there. I have no idea what caused the one that looks like someone with a big "gob" to split. The last time I tried to grow swedes, the cabbage white butterfly ruined them. See you soon.

Hi Adam, Love mashed Swede especially with mashed carrot. Also loved this video definately on form the master at work. Noticed the adverts in the middle well not in the middle about 5 seconds in. Now, I thought that YouTube did this on longer videos and less than 10 sec videos were void of this intrusion. My thinking was to reduce my videos to 8 seconds but obviously I am wrong. So, I played your video back to observe when they actualy occured and do you know what? The replay was totally advert free. Idea play the video first while its playing make a cup of tea come back play the video advert free uninterupted and enjoy the video and a cup of tea. Take care Mike

one Question about the courgettes, mine have about the same diameter as a normal fruit but are round and not long in any way, they are also very yellow. its my first time growing them so i'm not sure if this is natural? do they develop this way?

The best moment of gardening is when its time to harvest. Great looking harvest, you did great! Im still at it harvesting in my garden too. Great video Adam and thanks for sharing.
Be interested to know how fibrous these are when you cook them. I find that when brassicas get to that level of flowering they end up being ‘woody’, eg radishes, kohlrabi, turnips.
Sexy swedes
Hi Adam, I have always looked upon swedes as being a crop grown to pull in the autumn and store for winter use. The odd looking swede may have been growing against a large stone. I have never heard of the tops being cooked. Diced swede always good in a casserole.

Looks like pacman lol. Congratulations in your first swedes! Looks like a split to me. You could always use your waste leaves for the rabbits. They would probably go for that than your other veg. I say that but the grass is always greener on the otherside for rabbits lol.

I really like the tops/greens of rutabagas and turnips if you boil them with the roots about half and half put plenty of fresh pork neckbone or pig tails in there, most folks use smoked meat but Mama always favored fresh meat.salt and pepper and you got to put some pepper vinegar on your greens

Is the reason for them going to flower in the first year a bit of stress, well I saw two with splits, so maybe they ran out of water at some stage.
