I couldn't agree more. A solid wood chest is the best, hands down. Just stain it the color you like and don't worry about the read, it's part of it's history anyway. It will look wonderful whatever you do to it. That wood grain is gorgeous, can't wait to see what you end up with. Keep it light if you can, it would be wonderful to see that natural wood, even with the red in it.

I do know what you mean, I've got the same problem here, and then my daughter reminds me that Christmas is right around the corner too! I bet the added shelves are great. Makes for lots of room for things, and boy could I use as many shelves as I can get my hands on. My son and I are building a 2' x 8' shelving unit right now, you just can't have too many shelves. This is even after giving my children a lot of my old, but nice, kitchen items they pestered me for. I love old cabinets like yours 2
