Garden update on the progression of our permaculture garden, and some success we are having with hugelkultur. Also, a look into the roll of timing when planting polycultures.
When you put a polyculture together, do you design it or are you putting random types together? Are you tossing seeds or arranging them?
Do you mix annuals with perennials?
Do you weed anything?
I design them. I lijke to use companion planting books as a foundation, but I do not follow them to the T. I design the polycultures as plant guilds to help support each other. For example, Ilike to have a root crop like carrots to mine for nutrients, a nitrogen fixer like peas to build soil fertility, a flower like marigold to bring in pollinators etc Yes, the vegetable gardenis just helping to build soil fertility and provide food whil our fruit trees and strawberries are slowing taking over
In the future we want an orchard with strawberries as the ground cover,than we will start the system over again some where else. I only weed grass, and anything else that is negatively effecting my choice crops. Also if i weed it,it either gets chopped and dropped or composted. Great questions ,Thanks
What do you mean by "built it on contour" in reference to Hugelkultur bed? I really love watching the evolution of your yard. Prepping for spring; getting rid of my lawn!
