This is one of the most exciting bits of kit that I’ve used in the garden. Now a Brix Tester/Refractometer is used to measure quality of produce, the riper and more nutrient dense they are the higher the brix gets. A great video to learn more about it:

If you’re in the UK you can buy them here: http://amzn.to/1ABKFLu (Affiliate)
I plan to use this a lot more and after more research I’ll be doing a detailed video about it as well as how I and you too can use a brix tester to improve the quality in your fruit and vegetables.

That is a great tool. I imagine it will help you determine where you need to built soil to get optimal results. Thanks for sharing…..Ann
very interesting huw, even though I live in America your information is most helpful here in my garden
What phone do you have?I have a Samsung s3 mini.
How old are you? At what age did you start doing videos?
I wish more people did like turnips and swedes are my favorite do you grow swedes??? (I call the orange and purple ones swedes and the purple and white ones turnips)
in about 1968 there was a guy I saw using something like that and it tested the soda/carbonated water mix in the drink machine
Very interesting. I saw the same video by John Kohler …. I haven't bought one yet but I think I might just go for it.
Fantastic! Great idea for comparing veggies from different beds to see which are more nutrient dense!
Don't worry we trust you 😀
I hadn't heard of this tool before and I'm subscribed to both youtube channels you mentioned :/ im such a noobie. Is there perhaps something that also checks the soil? My new home has horrible looking soil and I'm curious if previous owner used any kind of weed killers as ma
Very interesting Huw, Thanks.
Sometimes I come for the great info. Sometimes I come for the entertaining programming. But sometimes I come just for the cool Brit accent. 🙂
Very interesting test, Huw! I look forward to your rock dust and biochar trials next year.
Hello Huw, when are you going to do a homegrown cooking show again!
"put all your trust in a British boy" 🙂 I love it. It's pretty cool that you can test the fruits and veggies like that.
420magazine lol what are you testing again huw 🙂
My new favorite saying round it up to good. Great video
I have been wanting a brix meter, what brand did you get and would you recommend it.
good info
Really don't like turnips.
Very interesting thanks!
Only 15. Wow! You look and sound so mature for your age. Good for you man. I just started last year and I am 24. Gardening is very exciting!
Love your passion for gardening at your age, I love it! keep the great videos coming.
Excellent video, Huw! This video really helped me out 🙂
Nice presentation! I, too, saw the Growing Your Greens video and had thought about getting a refractometer. Unfortunately, I got busy with other things, so I put the idea aside. Thanks for refreshing my memory! I agree…a good-excellent raspberry is a terrible thing to waste.
Where do you get them in the UK? I saw people using them in Japan and it made me want one to play with. I also dreamed of using them while shopping for fruit and veg but since you need the juice i guess it might not be viable for that (hate buying sour fruit). lol
Also, what variety of raspberries do you grow?
"You've got to put all of your trust into a British boy," such a good sentence lol! Thank you for sharing. Love your videos and even more impressed now that I know how young you are!

You want to explain that?
The sugar levels should be high when one starts growing not just when picked, the higher the better, the plant sap can be tested. Bugs and pest do not like high sugar levels, the infrared signature given off by the plant is what attracts bugs and low sugar levels is what the bugs love. So when the brix numbers get to excellent levels not only are they more nutritious but they taste bad to bugs. You will have no pests at all. Folair sprays are the best way and inoculating seeds will cause the rapid increase in photosynthesis which will produce the high sugar levels. Also a Sap Extractor, like vice grips, can be got at grassfarmersupply. com/store/product/sap-extractors
how is this working out? can you do an up to date episode?
