This pruning trick is no secret by any means, but by starting early
this tip can make a stalkier, sturdier, and healthier plant. Doubling,
tripling, even beyond that! The possibilities are endless with a long
enough growing season.

True: I understand something similar happens with Mint that will spread like wildfire
You could have prepared a basil plant that already started growing this way
can you do this with oregano too? 🙂
best gardening channel ever.
Two things I did to get a lot of basil was move it to a bigger pot and prune it a lot as mentioned in this video. I'm getting so much basil from one plant I dunno what to do with it all
The shoots are kind of like suckers
My basil more mature
than just the three leaves. Can I still prune or is it too late?

Will do so as soon as lockdown in South Africa allows me to. Any pruning tips on Italian Parsley please? The basil pruning tips were very explicit & clear. Thank you. Mariana Krüger South Africa
Ouff I just lopped off the top of the first seedling I grew successfully- that sure was hard to do!! Haha. Poor butchered plant!
Once and for all, is it alright to put a potted basil plant on a sunny window sill? Will it still thrive? And/or, is it always better to place outside in direct (not through a glass window pane) sunlight?
I use my basil for making pesto for freezing. In the past, I waited until late summer when the basil was big enough to get enough leaves for making a batch? Usually this was just as the plant(s) were starting to flower. The plants never seemed to recover after I clipped them back. If I prune too early, I will only get a few leaves….not enough to make a batch of pesto. Do you have any solution for this?
Hey Luke! You are getting close to 1 million subscribers. So Exciting!
This video is extremely informative. Thank you for explaining the process of how the plant's energy is being redistributed, AND why it is probably better to prune the plants towards the root of the plant. QUESTION- I'm sorry if this was already answered in the comments, but if you already have a basil plant that is past 6 inches tall, has anyone had any success with pruning it back down towards the root so that the plant is short and bushy? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you again Luke for a short informative and overall well-done video!
Please tell me what kind of basil is this
I am going to give this pruning method a go. Thank you Luke!
Pretty good video. My personal experience growing basil for my pesto production is that when you prune the plants, yes you get more leaves but they get smaller and smaller as the plant ages, which means that it takes more and more time to harvest and clean.
Superb video as always. Learnt a lot and enjoyed the tips in our garden as well.
you're not just handsome but really informative thank you for derailed explanation very inspiring video
I have seen videos where people prune just the top 2 leaves. So the two smallest ones. Would that also work, or is this the best way to do it?
Looking for some help! I have a small but long woody Thai Basil plant (almost a foot and half of wood growth) then the tops of green leaves (only about 4 leaves) How do I trim this guy? Can I cut into the woody base to trim him back? I don't want to kill it but he's getting too tall to be supported any more. Thanks in advance!!
But you do this with the peppers plants as well? Hmm…
I am gonna try it today.
Is pruning also good for others like parsley and mint?
Maybe touch your basil 3,000 more times…
Every time I try this on soon outside, the little ones die out and the first set droops and dies as well. If i keep it as is it flourishes. Am I doing something wrong? I did exactly what's been suggested here
you are so cute
