I am in Canada, we have those also they are called roller blinds here. They keep the heat out in the summer and I like them. You can just lift them up outside so someone wanting in could lift it and break the window if they wanted in bad enough, they just look secure and it would be easier to go to another house to break in. Ours are just installed with a header/frame outside not the box the you have.
I know em. My father always said he wanted these to keep the burglars out, altho there was nothing to take, nor was there ever broken into our house. Yes it keeps out heat or cold, light and even some sound, but boy, are they ugly …. Well, that's just my opinion ;oD

we have them here but the roll is mounted outside. work well for the hail too.
in california every house had bars on the windows. here in the midwest there are no bars on the windows. I have insulated windows
