My take on having a dairy cow on our homestead. It may not be for everyone… find out what I think here and see a few suggested books. Thanks for watching!

  1. Hello: Great info. I have a friend that has 300 + beef cattle. In the winter he feeds from morning till dark. Now he is mowing and bailing hay and working around the rain. Sunday he moved John Deere tractors from one farm to another for the right job. 1700 acres, there is some one repairing fence half the time. Last week 2 bulls got into a fight, one of them could no longer walk. It was put down and went to a freezer, his loss. No vacation no time off. If you think things are running smooth the bailer brakes or has a flat.

  2. Had a friend who went and got a milk cow without thinking long term.  Never factored in feed when snow is three feet deep, or that the cow needed milking twice a day which meant she did not get to go somewhere even over night. And she never had any idea what to do with ALL the milk she got.

  3. It's a big decision. I've thought about it for about 3 years now. I know chickens are like the gateway farm animal 🙂 I think this summer will see the barn go up and am looking at designs (my son is a dog person and trains dogs, wouldn't be without a Great Pyr on my place 🙂 and, I'd like to incorporate a nice training area onto the 'other' side of a barn situation). You gave the best advice possible. Look for people around you. People are fantastic about sharing knowledge regarding their experiences and knowledge. I know I looked into miniature cows. Visited a few breeders, they are bit of the rage now and they do eat less and are smaller. Pricey though. Easily twice the price of a normal milk cow. We just don't need the volume of milk, I'm allergic to goats, (raw milk is illegal to give away here practically). I'm in cattle country in Montana. I'm not fond of the Jersey breed, which is most of the mini milk cows available, although there is nothing 'wrong' with the breed. Many people love them. It's just I've seen so many neighbors have problems with them in this area. I was lucky enough to meet a wonderful woman who raises Brown Swiss and, in this area, I think it's a much more suitable breed considering winters and other factors. I've spent a bit of time with her and am learning a lot. Plus, with all the Angus around, I could breed her back to an Angus a neighbor may have and use calves for beef. There are a lot of decisions to make. The fencing, the housing the scheduling, the time, the vet bills. I do think I'm a couple years out on the final decision though. If I decide to do it, I'll put the hay fields in, I have over 100 acres and could manage that well enough. It's a HUGE commitment. So, I'll keep reading and contemplating. People should put a LOT of thought into it. Like I said, I'm 3 years into thinking. Also, my own age is a factor. My kids are near all grown (homeschooled) and will be doing their own things soon. I'd like to do some traveling. So, what is most important here for me? You're doing a good job! Keep it up.

  4. As always – we just love your videos. A question: Have you heard about the A1/A1 breeds vs the A2/A2 milking cow breeds?
We've heard about how it effects the quality of the milk so we are really looking into it.
Do you all have any thoughts about that subject? Thanks

  5. Thank you for all your sharing!
I just bought my first family cow Bella! Wow ,she’s so awesome!
    My homestead is almost complete!
    Thank you, again for sharing!❤️

  6. I know this is an older video, but we are going to look at our first milk cow(hopefully) tomorrow. I have went down the rabbit hole, but using excess for chickens and possibly dogs us one of my goals, I'd greatly appreciate more info on your rations that you are using for your chickens?
