Wow. Such an exciting experiment. So glad you've had this opportunity and you are the guys to move this forward. The move did raise some questions to me. I thought a key aspect of your whole philosophy JM was not to grow bigger but to produce higher quality veg. What led you to change your mind and expand quite a bit? I wonder what is happening with your old farm? Can you manage both, have you sold it, did someone take it over for you? Its great that you've been so successful and your global reach and inspiration should not be underestimated. I wonder how feasible this kind of set up is for new growers? Or is that not really a consideration for you? Good luck. I would love to visit some day – I'm planning my Canadian tour – Four seasons farm, green city acres, Sole Food…and maybe some mountains! 🙂

How deep is the pex buried beneath the ground? Does this mean that you cannot "turn/loosen" the soil periodically?

is this 1 million sales, gross, or net? when trying to calculate roi's and such for investment planning those numbers make a huge difference.
pulling these numbers out of my backside purely for illustrative reasons.
lets say i need 5 people at 50k/yr. after taxes thats 500k. equipment, maintenace, etc. probably another 1-200k. assuming you pay yourself a decent sum 1mill in sales translates to 1-200k profit.
while thats not a bad sum of dough its is crucial in deciding to pursue such an endeavor. if im making 100k and my bills fit, hearing i could make 100k on a third acre doing something i enjoy a lot more sounds great. but if that 100k is sales and i live in a high cost area thats an entirely different situation.
could you please walk through some of the realistic numbers regarding sales vs take home pay?
what source of heat are they using in their hydronic system ? it must take a shitload of BTU to heat so much cold soil. Great idea tho

We do a little bit of gardening ourselves and are planning on a greenhouse next spring.
Watching your videos will help immensely.
I piped a similar greenhouse 37 years ago with galvanized pipe. Had a number of force flow heaters in it. Worked year round. Stainless is hard to beat along with the pex in ground! State of the art!
Just a note…All pex pipe comes with a UV rating. Some are three months and others are as high as a year.
When pex is exposed to the sun or florescent lights for long periods of time; the pipe will break down and cracks will appear and it will eventually leak. I have seen it first hand a few times.
You should mention to JM that he should cover any pipe with foam insulation to prevent it from happening. It would be a shame see this happen after putting so much time and money into this project.

I like the content but why no walk around , it's a million dollar operation , all I seen was the warm water pipes, did the pipes make it cost a million? Or are the salary's calculated in? Just curious to see where the cost go because I wanna see where it cost the most to see if their other options etc. Not being negative just serious question.

Beneficial insects do work, they are a great tool that required very little work. Along with a good foliar spray a few times there should be a lot less pest pressure… good luck, im following along
Hey Curtis and JM. I am a Herpetologist and Urban Organic Farmer based in Johannesburg South Africa. For the past 5 years I have been farming a half hector (1 acre) of land on a 4 ha farm I unfortunately had to move from in February this year (2018). I have another 4 ha farm I am now living on and have started up again an a small scale but will be scaling up to use the full property. We are all organic and have a great round ecosystem where the rodents eat excess crops and provide our snakes with food but also our garden with compost, the chickens provide us with fertilizer, the bees pollinate our crops and this is just a short example of the ecosystem that we have created. We are based just 10 km from the urban hub of the busy city and we are passionate about Organic Urban Farming with plans to help provide an income for the local impoverished communities in the Cities of SA.
If you guys are ever keen to visit the country I would be honored to host you and show you around our farm and others. You never know, maybe there is a business opportunity here for you.
