VIDEO: Amazing Asparagus Harvest From 3 Year Old Plants

This year was amazing for asparagus! We had crowns producing between
3-6 stalks of asparagus and they were HUGE! We really had a bumper
crop. All organically grown too! We also talk a bit about when is the
best time to harvest asparagus, and how our method of growing is more
productive than traditional farming practices.

  1. not so …. the proper way to harvest asparagus is not to cut above ground but to use your hand and break the asparagus below ground and right from the root stock. You will find that you will get better asparagus and a healthier plant. When you harvest this way you encourage the plant to grow, it's sorta like trimming a tree, it encourage growth. Before you disagree, try if…..

  2. my grandma had a asparagus patch she planted when i was a kid and by the time i reached a adult she feared it because it never stopped producing and she constantly gave away bags of asparagus and she still ended up with more than 40 lbs ….(instead of a knife we used scissors because it took to long useing a knife)

  3. I'm getting soooo hungry reading all these comments about the way you guys cook it. I like it raw, but I love it cooked, too. Asparagus is just the very best.

  4. Sorry but you are wrong . My husband worked and cut asparagus in 1 of the largest farms . Crown should be buried deep as you should cut it below ground . By cutting above you ruin the crown . When cut above the crown struggles as you can see it has grow more roots to try keep producing . If you cut below it will keep producing . They are normally grown in mounds for best results. Best cut round 20cm long as it gets stringy tougher the longer it gets.

  5. I am currently starting my gardening journey in the backyard of my City home. In three years I will be moving tomorrow more rural land where I plan to pursue larger-scale gardening. I would like to have a jump start on my asparagus harvesting. Do you think asparagus would transplant well on the third year removing from the ground and transplanting to another location? Your video says you do not recommend potting the plants however I feel like this scenario would be good for potting the plants

  6. This year was the third year for my five plants, as well as my first harvest, and Im getting the same huge spears as these…I just cut one that was two feet! It was tender all the way.

  7. Thank you , I thought the ones I planted a year ago died , today 4 out of 6 have come back . Very good info … Much appreciated

  8. I would love to know how far apart to plant crowns in a raised bed, in both dimensions. So, if you plant the crowns 8 or 12 or whatever inches apart in a row, how far apart are the rows supposed to be? In a raised bed, not a field:) I cannot find this info anywhere! Thanks!

  9. Thank you for the outside dimensions (4'X15') and plant quantity (50). Taking into account of the inside dimensions, I figure about 1 crown every 12.9" sq. I planted ten crowns earlier this spring in a 4'X4' raised bed with 14.7" sq. spacing and was concerned about crowding. Thanks to your other asparagus videos the tenth crown finally showed its head this morning! Ten out of ten with great soil! Thank you, Luke!
