VIDEO: How to Start Scything – Recommended Method

I was really happy with the response to my previous scything video. I decided to create a new video telling you what I think is the best path to take in order to start/get into scything. Here is a link to the course I went on if you live in the UK: http://scythecymru.co.uk/courses/scythe-and-haymaking-courses/
Also if you wish to buy a scythe then I recommend following this link: http://www.green-shopping.co.uk/tools/scythes.html

  1. I am a little worried because the sky is grey, the weather seems cold, and you are wearing a T shirt.
Is it warm in Wales on cloudy days or are you weather resistant? Cheers.

  2. A 'continental scythe' is not a 'better' design it is a lighter design. The English scythe was heavier to compensate for it's environment. It was used in thicker heavy grasses, soils and bogs where it needed to be more robust than the more fragile Austrian scythe. Incidently the English scythe because of the tougher blade needs far less peening.

  3. Scything is fab, a beautiful activity on a sunny day. No vibration, no racket, no smell, no pollution, just the swish of the blade through the grass while listening to the birds singing. Better for you and the environment.

  4. So how do we do it, I was hoping you’d show us as a tutorial. Mine doesn’t seem to be cutting, the grass is nearly as big as me and quite tough.

  5. Just watching the practical application helped me fix my form and swing. I now have half my small field of winter wheat harvested. Thank you

  6. just did my last meadow cut today quite relaxing once you get the hang of it loads better than my petrol scythe mower which i sold , and i actually found it a lot faster than petrol job. bought an Austrian FUX blade scythe tried a couple more but find these the best by far id highly recommend scything to anybody
