Have you tried using fall leaves as the core since this video was made?
Can you use cut up ornamental grasses?
I only have access to chicken manure. Would you add this the same way as straw then?
Nice one Luke. Instead of straw, how about lots of wood shavings and chicken pooh, washed over thoroughly with comfrey & nettle tea?
Should we be concerned with whether the straw is GMO'd, and/or treated with pesticides and/or herbicides? Is it possible to find "clean" straw?
I suppose I accidentally used this method this year! When planting my tomatoes, I dug a deep hole, filled it with compost, put tomatoes in it deeply, and backfilled with dirt. The tomatoes have only been watered when fertilized other than ONE time that it was going to be an especially hot day, but they showed no signs of needing water. I fertilize every 3 weeks to give you an idea….The compost is acting as a water retentive sponge. My tomatoes are almost 9 ft. tall, not pruned.
I have subterranean termites in my vegetable garden.Will adding wood or hay to the garden beds increase the problem? Are there other methods that you can recommend to make my garden more water efficient? MY water bill last year was outrageous. Please HELP!

Can you do this with out a raised bed?
The resources out here in the Mohave desert are pretty limited. Can this be done with shredded cardboard and paper?
I have tilled truck load of leaves & dry grass in the garden in the Fall & found nothing by Spring. I have done this for years, not using bag fertilizer.

Kinda sounds like what I do, I use straw as mulch and bury it in the beds at the end of the season. Gonna make it more intentional and try it in the new beds for fall
I turned a shovel upside down and shoved the handle down to the straw about every 12 inches along where I buried the straw. Then I shoved the hose down each hole and let the water soak the straw really well and then moved to the next hole. I wanted to make sure the straw was good and wet. I do it every 3 or 4 weeks. It seems to be working. Wish me luck!
Can you do core gardening with potted plants?
How do you recommend adding nitrogen when using this method? Would worm castings be enough?
Are you burying the straw in the fall or the spring? I know you showed how to do it in the fall but your comments makes it sound like you do it in the spring so that by the following spring it has broken down and you can add more.
Is straw they same as hay?
What ratio of soil and compost works best to begin a raised bed? Do you ever use mushroom soil? (We can get reclaimed mushroom soil on the east coast area PA through Delaware.
Luke, Last year I had some zebra landscaping grass and bury it in my vegetable garden also in 2 months when I tilting it had pretty much was gone.
I'm sujest trying Zebra landscaping grass to get your african effect.

I sujest you put a lounge chair in your garden so lazy people will follow, But I prefer your teaching as they are.
Problem is lots of people love potatoes but will not dig if they are free.

When watering throughout the growing season, do you water just the core. My garden is in CA where we do not get summer rain.
I also add Alfalfa pellets
