This year was the first year we have got sweet potatoes to grow all
season. With a hot summer, good soil, and a nice early start, I think
it was just the perfect conditions to have a good year.

Well Done!!!
I am in Australia and watch your videos often.
Just a suggestion would it help to make a little poly tunnel to extend your growing season for the sweet potatoes?
Cheers.
That best part of it is that daddy grew his own organic sweet potato for little princess:-) Good harvest Luke.
Hi, MIgardener, Are you familiar with Japanese sweet potato? if you do, do you know the right time to harvest?
Sweet potatoes in Michigan, so cool!!
You need to age them so they get sweet
this was my first year for trying to do sweet potatoes and half way through the season I'd seen your video telling about how "perfect" everything had to be – I'd grown my own slips from organic potatoes I bought and I'm actually pretty good at that part – put several plants in the garden (zone 5 Central PA) and after seeing that video and seeing that while my vines did well I never got any blossoms, not a single one – I came to the conclusion there would be nothing to dig up – well I just watched this video this morning and after you talking about how your season went I went outside, found a vine – frost had killed all the leaves and I didn't realize there was a vine there to find til a few minutes ago and voila I actually grew some pretty nice sweet potatoes – haven't pulled them all – weather isn't cooperating with that – but I'm tickled that my vines gave me a harvest – can't wait to see what all is out there – wish I could share pics with you guys!!!! You guys are my go to for learning and inspiration!! Thanks so much for all you do to help gardeners!
Nice haul! Mine were pretty wimpy but I have since learned that I need to use clear builder's plastic to warm up the soil in May then plant the slips into holes in the plastic in June.
you should let them cure for a few weeks before trying to cook. This gives them time to sweeten up. Freshly dug sweet potatoes are more starchy than sweet.
You are a true inspiration on caring for you family in a healthy way by growing your own foods. I love it!
you can plant the vines or some small potato and hey sweet potatoes are perennial u can just dig for the big one and let the plant produce more..maybe when I get home I can show you our sweet potato plants..u can also eat the young leaves..just boil it,drain, and add some salt olive oil onion and lemon juice!
Hi Luke, we live in Howell Michigan. I tried sweet potatoes also for the first time last summer. I used Beauregard and planted 8 slips. we ended up with almost 50 pounds, but about 75% had little black holes in them. I just cut them out as I used them but it is a huge pain. Could it be some type of maggot? We are vegetarians and are trying to live off what we grow as much as we can so any advise would be really appreciated! I really love your videos!!
Your joy is infectious! Thanks for the nice video!
is this variety of sweet potato leaf edible?
Is it really that exciting pulling sweet potatoes out of the ground.. hell yeah Lol
oh man, huge thumbs up!!!! 🙂
OMG they are so cute!
oh my god I've never tasted one from the garden. I live in Seattle their generation my mother just passed and she was born in 1926 nine of 10 children. I had just got in my Greenhouse when somebody took my house and everything away from me so I've never had any. I mean I've eaten lots but who knows how old they are by the time you get them I want to taste one really bad! it is so fun watching you do this! almost as much fun as digging up your own but not really. Haha
I, too, just love your excitement! I know how you feel! I want to know how to grow Sweet Potatoes so I turned to your channel! You are my Go-To!
Thanks for all your wisdom!
you soil was far too heavy , next time mix straw or a lot of sawdust into your soil
Hey I am in southern Japan near Hiroshima trying to grow sweet potatoes. How do I know how much water they need or if it’s too hot for them? (I’m from near Canada).
I take it from how far down they went their soil does not need to be as loos as for normal potatos
Soil looks boss.
They taste lika a carrots, nothing special
I have planted sweet potato 5 months ago. Please do a video about when to harvest.
Hooray!
I noticed the short piece on the garden box didn't overlap the ends of the long piece but went in between the two long pieces. No big deal, of course, but it seems the practice is for the ends on short pieces to overlap the ends on the long pieces. I normally follow the practice but didn't on my last box (wasn't thinking) and have been kicking myself because I think the overlapping effect looks better. This is why I noticed the design of the garden box here. I guess it makes me feel a bit better that someone else also has a slightly less appealing garden box.
I love your excitement at the harvest. That’s exactly how I feel when I grow anything.
