VIDEO: Mango Fruit Don’t Taste Like They Used To

Mangoes and other fruit purchased in the supermarket don’t taste the way they used to so in this video I give my opinion on what I think is the main reason for the lack of flavour in fruit today.
Mangoes and other fruit purchased in the supermarket don’t taste the way they used to so in this video I give my opinion on what I think is the main reason for the lack of flavour in fruit today.

I think the main reason much of the fruit in supermarkets is tasteless or blander than it used to be is because of picking the fruit too early and this is what I chat about in the video.

In my blog article (written several years ago), I detail many other reasons why supermarket fruit is not as good as it used to be… My old article mentioned in the video is here: https://www.selfsufficientme.com/fruit-vegetables/same-fruits-different-tastes

Also, I want to make it quite clear my sentiments in this video rant whilst critical of some farmers practices (specifically picking fruit too early) I am not attacking farmers or farming but merely making a point that taste for fruits is important and it shouldn’t be just the looks on the shelf or keeping quality being the number 1 priority.

Thanks for watching! 🙂

  1. Mangoes are now ripened with deadly calcium carbide. They are picked green before even showing the slightest tint of yellow and then ripened with banned but still used in Third World countries calcium carbide. This chemical damages your kidneys, causes headaches, sore throats and can even lead to coma and death but as the saying goes, 'Money is the root of all evil" If you want to stay alive and keep healthy FORGET about eating mangoes ever. Unless you have your own tree or get it from a friend's place who can guarantee it is not artificially ripened.

  2. What about frozen fruits, are they any different? I eat a lot of fruits frozen and they taste pretty good. Frozen mangos that I sometimes buy taste fine to me, but I'm probably missing out since I've never had one right off the tree.

  3. I've got a small mango in a big pot but it's not growing very quickly.
I thought if I plant it in the ground it would grow much better. I'm in Sth Aus.
I'll have to check your other videos for soil & fertilizer recommendations.
I really want this plant to grow. I love mangoes but will not eat poisonous & tasteless shop fruit.

  4. I'm sorry but that's insanity. I live in Canada and can buy a 10 lb case of mangos for 8 to 12 cnd at any store, I'm not even in a capital city

  5. pffff Mark do you think people will bag the mangos? You're out of your mind, people don't know anything anymore. First they don't even know that they should kept the trees at small size so you can easily reach them.

  6. I never used to like mangos. Always had ones from the grocery. THEN, a friend convinced me to eat one that had just literally fallen off the tree in the yard. I was hooked! Inspired me to grow my own.

  7. 100% true, I wish I could post my pictures. Im from the US and my husband is military, we live on base and have a grocery store called the Commissary. It has the absolute worst produce on the planet. Everything is rotten on the shelves, mangos are green and molded inside. Bananas last a day or two and the salad bags are all slimy. Horrible food.

  8. If we had more schools that would teach kids about this stuff. I think we would see a big change in our how our children choose to shop and eat as adults . It scares me to know they aren't putting hazard labels on this stuff. Not even a please wash before eating sign.

  9. We get mangoes in the UK and they are hard as concrete – like biting into wood. But when the Indian varieties like Kesar and alphonso come in they are amazing

  10. I grew up in the subtopics and mangoes were the treats. One single mango could perfume an entire room. Fast forward to present, the same mangoes (in appearance) grown in Mexico taste sweet and have the right texture but have zero aroma. They are usually priced at $2/ea. There are mangoes from Hawaii but they are sometimes stringy and of course, different variety.

  11. And then there are is in the northern temperate climates, who are only able to experience fully ripened fruit on trips to warmer countries, because it isn’t a possibility to grow mangoes in these climates.
