Very cool. I think everyone should do what your doing.
run your tiller diagonal in both directions then square of in both directions and you can level that soil.
Just an observation, but refueling over the growing area is a good way to contaminate your soil with petroleum. And yes, I do realize its a pain to move the BCS manually off the plot, especially in plowed soil.
jang seeder just got delivered today. thank you for all your info and inspiration Curtis.
You guys don't even deal with rocks! Too funny how clean that is
Hey Curtis. I saw one video with JM on the BCS with a bed shaping attachment. I cant find it anywhere have you heard anything about it? https://youtu.be/tFKbufgnr4E?t=62
How does this affect property values? Does your house drop do your neighbors? I'm all for having gardens etc but on this scale in a neighborhood? I was raised on a farm and spent 19 years on it. But now as a homeowner in the suburbs I have to be honest and say I would be concerned with this. How would one market their home, oooh that's my neighbors farm don't mind the greenhouse? I enjoy your videos and I'm not bashing at all just curious about that aspect of it. Thanks.
Every time I see people up north cut into that dark soil I am Soooo jelly! We have sand, clay and shell in Florida and it would take years to get dirt like that!
This was awesome. What was the first machine you used, and then what brand was the tiller you used?
Killer…
You are indeed blessed in having a career you love, passionate about and am able to empower others .
Curtis i'm so glad you did this video. The one plot I'm expanding on has a couple ruts, so to speak, and a natural slope that kind of funnels on the low end and goes to one side.. The video answered a couple questions. If you think it would be fitting, I know I would greatly benefit from you filming how you guys finish leveling it off.
Ripping it goodbye
My mom wants me to rip up all the grass in our backyard and replace it with new grass. Should I just make a tiny urban farm instead?
Just tore up some sod this week and put in 4 more 25 foot beds. Pretty sure I accidentally crossed some of my seed rows while seeding kale. Hopefully that won't affect germination or growth. Very excited to hit my first Market in May!
why take the torn up sod when the sode could of been brought back to life with watering and resold or comcposted
hahahahaa Gasoline, never gets old lmmmaaao
Makes me want to get up and dance……
Wouldn't it be wise to till some Perlite into the soil in this first step?
Looks like great soil, just wondering.
Also, can't you capture some hard surface run-off from the roof and hold it?
I'm gathering that water isn't a huge concern.
That space turned out nice. This time of year it's wise to manage your personal energy for the long haul…liked!
I notice people put dirt rocks sod unwanted things in the free grouping of craigslist all the time maybe next please try craigslist.
Hi Curtis, I live in the lower Mainland of bc and have fallow ag land that hasn't had Any work done on it yet this year as I was battling illness for the past three months. Am I too late to crush the soil prep and make a go of the year? Not sure if you have a vid on later-season plot starts? Love the informative videos, beautiful of you to share content so freely 🙂
Lawns are only good for a place for my dog to go to the bathroom and to create material for my compost pile. (not dog waste)
You have more confidence in your gas pouring ability than I my friend. I ALWAYS move my equipment to the side of a plot when gas is involved!
standard recommendations are to have your garden on a slight grade for optimal performance. low spots are bad
By hand you wouldn't haven't had a grade. it was the machines prob. ur eye is better.
Hi. What are your thoughts on sheet mulching (or similar) instead of churning all the grass up? Cheers.
He's not afraid to ask for help, that's impressive. He's getting older, we all can relate to that right? This is the 3rd video I'm following on this and it's really interesting. Great stuff, I'm definitely gonna buy the book. He has such a lot to teach!
I feel like you are inspiring the neighbors. Every time you're at this plot it seems like they are out working on their yard.
With no plow/bcs, whats the best approach? Access to compost/etc. is a ready option. I have the area tarped to kill off the grass/weeds/etc.. Considering just covering and building beds with a bunch material on top of stale bed? Other option would be purchasing or borrowing a basic tiller and building beds from there? Tilling would allow me to import less material ( maybe less work , not sure ). Covering would require much more material, more wheelbarrow trips and what not. Any thoughts?
