  1. Whoever is the nosiness is your complainer! As a electrician, I have seen all sorts of people come on the jobs sites asking 100 questions and the next day I'll have an inspector stop by for compliance check for complaint. They're always the nicest and have plenty of stories to tell is another give away! Yes I know it's shitty to see it that way but I'm almost always right, they will return and ask what the inspector said or won't even acknowledge me the next time I see them

  2. Well, if you deliver your produce to local restaurants, see about getting signs that say "X Purchases produce from this Grower" – or something.

or, perhaps something like – "If you don't like my garden, don't eat at the following places – " and list all of the places that buy stuff from you, although that might anger the complainer more.

As for me, I have a very lenient landlord – "Grow anything you want, so long as it's legal." is their stance on gardening – of course, said landlord is a farmer, with a long history of growing things. Then again, him being my great-uncle helps.

  3. i bet you there was no complainer! its the tactic these haters use to shut us down or get us in the court room paying the piper. just like when police say they got an anonymous tip, no victim no crime! if you really want to find out who it was, if it was anyone, then you have the right in court to press that issue…if someone snitches on you and you plead innocent (or in this case just not agreeing to any bargains) i think they have to testify against you or its thrown out….not positive on the circumstances.

  4. I plan to put up the full 2 meter solid fence that the city allows and put in as many large hedge/trees as I can. Going to cut into my planting area but I won't have complaints. I figure it was the new neighbour as the rest of them have been neighbours for years. Need to kill off the silver lace and Virginia creeper to keep them off my shed/house roof and on his property. Hopefully the new fence will mean no more replacing of the shed roof. We want to start growing all our vegetables and most of the fruit we need. We plan to do raised beds about 7 – 4' x 8' and yes 3 will be in the front yard.

  5. Well Curtis, this may or may not surprise you, did you ever think that the "complainer" was the "by-law guy"? I had a similar situation and found that there was no public complaint and was told that because the city person didn't like "confrontations"!

  6. BTW, those look like what I know as high tunnels because the plants are in/on the ground. A true greenhouse is where the plants are on benches. A technicality I know, but just in case legal clarification is ever needed.

  7. Actually doing a small farm business on the side is TOTALLY legal in a residential neighborhood. He has NO customers coming to his home to buy his stuff. A current CITY Business license for an IN HOME business is NO different than the guy selling stuff on EBAY. Or the lady down the street doing a day care, a local handyman, tree service, hair stylist or the local drug dealer 🙂

  8. if a home is being sold in the area it is often a realtor that is complaining. if that case there is nothing you can do but to wait it out. they don't care how awesome your greenhouse is only that it is not normal.

  9. glad I watched until the end, Selmer, TN?! That's near me. The maybe question I've had in watching this is how it would work in a rural area where most everyone has garden. See you there!

  10. Are you located in the USA? Any suggestions for Indoor rapid yield, year round veggies, I have about 40sqft and a 8 bulb grow light. Nothing illegal though. I want to keep my fridge stocked year round with veggies. Thanks in advance. I'm located in southern California. My backyard has morning to noon sun, front yard is very limited in size about 3 feet wide and about 20 feet long, right now I have an infestation of purslane that won't die.

  11. It's usually real estate people who have houses they want to sell a house for more $ and complain about EVERY little thing that they perceive as an eye sore. It's lame. I was just in Kelowna last week and there should be more food gardens.
