VIDEO: How to Grow Vinca Rosea/Periwinkle/Sadabahar Plant in Pots & Care Tips

VINCA ROSEA/PERIWINKLE/SADABAHAR PLANT IS VERY EASY TO GROW ..FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS ALL YEAR LONG…:)
The two most common garden and potting plants given the familiar name periwinkle, Vinca minor and Vinca major, have similar care needs. Both can be grown in the ground as ground cover or in pots as a low-growing and trailing plant that accentuates taller pot plants.
daizz’s tips:-
1.)Use any potting soil mixed with 20% sand in your Vinca periwinkle’s pot. These are hardy plants tolerant of most soil types as long as the mix drains well. The sand helps create a soil that drains easily.
2.)Plant the Vinca periwinkle along the edges of your pot, encircling the taller plants in the middle. This is a trailing plant that grows out of the pot. If planted in the middle, it may overgrow inside the pot and prevent other plants in the pot from thriving.
3.)Add mulch to the top of the soil to protect the Vinca periwinkle and other plants from extreme temperatures and keep the soil moist.
4.)Place the pot in a spot where it gets partial sun. Vinca periwinkle grows best in mostly shade but flowers best with more sunlight. However, too much direct afternoon sunlight can burn the plant.
5.)Prune the Vinca periwinkle regularly. In optimal conditions, the plant grows beyond the pot without stopping. You can cut it back anytime of the year and to the length you prefer the vine to be at.
6.)Add fertilizer to the pot in the spring after the last frost. This is the start of the growing season for Vinca periwinkle. You can use any general-purpose fertilizer per the instructions on the label.
7.)Water as needed to keep the soil moist in the summer. In the winter, you do not need to water as often, because Vinca periwinkle does not grow much during the colder months.

  1. Thank God for YouTube videos like this man makes. I planted some lavender this year with the bag around the roots–didn't know they were supposed to be removed because they appeared to be made from mesh, so I left them on. Plants are leaning as a result, but for the most part, are doing okay. Wish I had seen this video before I did the planting. Thank you, Urban Gardening. I am about to plant some vincas now.

  2. I just went grocery shopping and bought 3 of these beautiful plants from a vendor at the side of the road. They seem to be very healthy and I hope they do well. Love all the way from Jamaica

  3. My vinca is in danger … flowers are getting smaller day by day and leaves are getting yellow. What to do? It is summer 35degrees here and I am watering them regularly

  4. My vinca leaves are turning light green. what should i do to stop it? happening to two of the three plants I have. It gets morning sun only, till 11-12 am. and i water only when the soil is dry

  5. Hello from Greece, I watch many of your videos, you are very helpful, thank you! I would like your opinion: I want to plant small perennial flowers (I like purple colour) around trees I keep in large pots. I don't want to do something that might hurt the trees, so I look for plants that don't have deep roots, I suppose? What would you think of vinca major, verbena, scabiosa, trailing rosemary and penstemon, for this purpose? Also please advise if I should not do this on trees that during winter don't need much water because they are dormant (throw all their leaves, like lilac or wisteria).
