  1. Patara, I know this is off the subject, but just to let you know I've been loving my tomatoes like a good woman…Picking suckers like crazy…..They are 7 feet high , no blight, happy plants. Thanks for the saying,,,I think of you everytime, I'm out in the garden. Love you and Starry….Rich and Dee from MN.

  2. Thank you for this. One of the many reasons my husband and I want to homestead is because our youngest (6) has ADHD. We see the benefits for him. He already has a long list of animals he wants. Top of the list is ducks and cats lol. So thank you for validating this.

  3. I just found your youtube channel and I love it.  However, the first video I watched,  oh my gosh I assumed you were this cute little 'youngster' that loved to cook.  I had no idea you were  a married lady with children!!  If I can look as young as you, I think I'm going to have to take up homesteading!!! lol

  4. He's learned all the steps to do the job and now doesn't get overwhelmed. My youngest was Dx with Aspergers when he was 13. Everything just took longer and more modeling the procedures then his older brother. Driving meant lots of time behind the wheel time.

  5. Thank you. My 6 yr old has anxiety. He throws huge fits over the smallest thing. I've tried getting him involved more in taking care of our chickens, ducks, cats, dog and now horse. He would rather play video games, and electronics than help. He'll help a little, but not much. Telling me this will help me deal with this issue we're having.

  6. I live in the suburbs, but we have a dozen chickens in our yard and my small kiddos (5, 3, and 3) help with all the aspects of raising them and caring for them. One of my youngest is autistic and I look forward to seeing how this will help him in the future. I also work at a daycare, and we grew a garden this spring/summer. The kids are so enthusiastic about eating their delicious fresh veggies. An age-appropriate sense of responsibility gives kids confidence and peace.

  7. I appreciate this very much. My oldest has several neurological issues. We homeschool and homestead as well. We still deal with a lot of anxiety with him but I agree this lifestyle does help him.

  8. Patara, my hats off to you. It is not often that children will do what yours have done without a bunch of back talk. You have raised a fine group of boys.keep up the good work.

  9. I feel lucky to have known my whole life how healing nature is. I relate to people on the spectrum,  I wasn't raised right, anxiety depression and Irritable bowl syndrome. I'm going to be 20 yet I feel like a child. I have lots of guilt. I KNOW this lifestyle would heal me, I want and like physical labor. My family is going to move, possibly on some acres. I'm wondering if it would be acceptable to do all the work for them (growing lots of food for them, any other chores.) instead of getting a job. Or is that not wise? I don't now how long I'd do it, but I was thinking it could give me time to heal.

  10. My daughter is in college and a great student . Grew up in suburbia. She told me recently : I’m lacking in life skills . And she goes on hikes or spends time with animals to reduce stress . Volunteering has really given her a boost as well – you have some good points .

  11. My youngest 2 daughters have learning disorders. I cannot wait to buy our little farm and get them outside and healed. Time outside is so important for children and animals are very healing beings.

  12. This is so true! I have a daughter that is on the spectrum , when she was little we took her to food therapy because she was so afraid to eat anything new. Then, one day I thought…what is she grows it!? So , we picked out the seeds together instead of just me doing all the garden planning. She planted and watered, and worked… by the time her onions and okra and green beans had grown ready to harvest she was so invested emotionally and physically that she couldn't wait to try it … fast forward several years … and she loves every single veggie in the garden and eats more veggies than anyone else in the family!

  13. Our 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with Autism with ADHD and Anxiety. We have 2 brooders running so gave one to her that has 5 Rhode Island Reds in it to care for. It is helping her deal better with her anxiety.

  14. Fast forward 3 yrs….I hope more folks watch this. I get frustrated when folks make fun of "safe places." The animals your Son was in charge of that day or for ever how long, was his safe place. How is that fun to poke at? I just don't get it. Just because one Human is not like the other doesn't mean they are less than. Machismo has to go.

  15. I'm uncertain how long I have followed you but it has been a few years. We are looking to begin a search for a small place with elbow room. We have a young adult with autism, another son who is very high functioning but we know the entire family would/will benefit from transitioning into this lifestyle. Thank you for all you share.

  16. I know I’m late to the video…but this is the second (older) video I have watched today. And I don’t even have kids! I think it’s a good practice for anyone, not just kids.
