Should I prune my semi-determinate tomato? I have a “mystery variety” that is clearly determinate (based on the fact that it’s a bush), but now I’m wondering if it’s semi-determinate. It just keeps endlessly putting out suckers. It has gotten so big and giant I can barely manage it. It’s 5 or 6 feet wide and about 5 feet tall. I’m thinking about pruning it just so I can handle it 🙁 but on the other hand if I don’t, I’m wondering if I may get endless yields from it throughout the season as if it were indeterminate. Thoughts? It’s an insane tomato plant!
Well thanks for this information, wow we are always learning!
So it was a determinant height and a bush variety but since he grew it with indeterminants he had to prune it?
The mistake is mentioned at minute 4:06 , in case other viewers are as impatient as I am and want to know what we did wrong!
If it matters to your future self, you helped me to not make this mistake today! PS. You are doing great in the future!!
Omg I literally just pruned all the suckers and lower branches today, what have I done ! Will they grow back ? Is there anything I can do now ?
You need I my girl with u when gardening…shes removed all my tomato labels! I grow 8 of 6 /8 of each type…so I'm fuming as wont know which is which..shes pleased as said it will be a surprise mum!..which is which!! She loves to pull carrots n look if grown..if not she rames Back in the hole…
Thank you, I have to google my 8 different varieties. I hope the deer didn’t prune the wrong tomatoes for me.
I wish I would have watched this a few months ago…. everything I have I’ve pruned, and I have a combination of the two. Guess I’ll figure out which ones and stop pruning the determinant
#Question: does pruning increase tomato size on the branches that are left to grow?
I made that mistake last year. Now it makes sense.
Good information. Thx
Thanks for the great tip Luke
This saved me from pruning my determinate Roma tomatoes this spring!
I can decrease tomato yields by 80% with my brown thumb skills
Great video! I wish I would have come across it yesterday before I pruned the heck out of my determinate tomato plants. I guess, you live and you learn. Thanks for sharing such helpful content!!!
Where will it say if a plant is determinate?
I did that because my grandkids took the tags out of the pots so I did not know which was which. It only had 6 blooms on it. Since the season was early and space limited so I put an indeterminate variety in it's place. Somewhere in my garden is an indeterminate that is growing like crazy without any pruning. LOL.
Yea that's BS. You can prune Determinate tomatoes for bigger tomatoes and disease resistance.
Those few tomatoes you get will be the best ones, because the plant has to put all its effort into the only fruit left.
Is there an early sign to watch for? I was given the plants and there is no marker tag…??
I know not to prune/single stem determinate tomatoes, BUT do you single stem and prune suckers on Cherry tomato plants??
Oh!!! I have a determined green pepper plant and an undetermined plant. I thought I had a crappy green pepper plant that wouldn't grow anything! So I just need to be patient for the 2nd one!!
