Timely video! I just picked up a jang seeder and some space spinach from William dam seeds in Ontario . I do not want to buy an earthway seeder on top of this. Any recommendations which roller to use for beets (red ace) and spinach (space). You just mentioned you only use the earthway now for spinach, but your book does not indicate a roller to use for beets. I will be using seed densities and soacing indicated in your book. Any tips are greatly appreciated. P.S. I continue to enjoy your work with great admiration!
I sure wish we could grow spinach in the summer here in Central Tx, but with our triple digit dry summers, it's better suited as a fall/winter crop.
How do you keep your greens from going "bitter" in the summer heat? I can make it grow in our +100°F, but it just tastes awful.
Hi Curtis. This may seem like a silly question but with regards to seeders (I've watched your videos on the jang seeder and earthway….as well as many others) but I'm a bit perplexed as to how they actually drop seed. From what I have seen, it looks like they drop small clusters at intervals? Is that correct? How would this not over seed at each interval? Or is the idea that not all of the seeds will actually geminate.
I know it might be a silly question but it's really been eating at me for ages but I've been too embarrassed to ask!!
Thanks for the info! I'll have to try Avon. I live in Kelowna also, and have had good results with Reflect. I watered it a couple times a day when it was really hot and especially during germination. I actually had very little problems with bolting. I've been getting 2-3 cuts per bed. I had a terrible time with carrots this summer until I started watering twice a day during germination which resulted in almost perfect germination during some of the hottest days of the summer! Sure appreciate your videos Btw!!
you need to paperpot it man, that's what I'm doing, saves a ton of seed
Spinach is flat out not a summer crop
There is a variety of spinach "New Zealand" that grows better in the heat.

We have brutal, long summers here in the Deep South USA. We cover our cilantro, tomatoes & heat intolerant crops with shade cloth any day it's over 85 degrees. It keeps the temperature about 10-15 degrees cooler and it works really well for us. We use 50% cloth. Haven't tried spinach, will do it next summer.
What do you think about 28 inch beds?

On Diego Footer's latest FSFS he had Been Hartman on and they discussed summer spinach starting (I think Ben is doing it in his basement) and paper pot transplanting. Not sure what minute mark, but it was a good discussion in general.
The "orange hue" has more to do with the fact that you're using Auto White Balance with your camera. The sky has more orange in it so the white balance is adjusted accordingly. (you'll notice it's less orange when you're kneeling down next to hedge and no orange hue at all when you're filming the spinach on the ground because the auto white balance is keying off the green spinach)
If you use MANUAL White Balance and dial-in the colour temperature (generally between 3400 and 5600K, depending on the sky colour, you won't get fluctuations in overall hue as you do when using Auto White Balance. The colour will be set at what you set it at and will not change. Cheers!

21 days from germination to cut or after germination
Isnt spinach also day-length sensitive? if the nights are too short they are more inclined to form arrowhead shaped leaves and then bolt. Regardless of temps its about "photoperiodism". finding out how to maximize productivity in summer would be great though.

Maybe try New Zealand or Galilee in the summer? New Zealand and Giant Noble did pretty well for me this past August. But yes, the Reflect and Carmel was miserable. Good germination, but they came up about an inch and just petered out. Very disappointing. But I did not realize those were not a good summer spinach so maybe I will try them again now that its cooler where I live. I am also going to try Seaside per recommendation from Johnny's. I'll have to try Space now too since all I really want is a fast growing flat leaf variety.
If you had to use the Jang seeder, what plate would you use? I don't want to buy another seeder just for one crop.
Just came across the video. I live in south Texas. It’s near the end of March….would it still be okay to plant now in a full sun area or should I opt for an area which gets shaded as the temps here get really high, already upper 80’s to low 90’s? Also what are those evergreens you have? They look brilliant!
Someone may have asked this, but what about using shade cloth?
I put my spinach seeds wrapped in a wet paper towel in a zip lock bag and place in fridge for a few days..then plant.
