VIDEO: Expanded Clay Pellets (Hydroton) Growing Guide

Sorry for the auto-focusing issues on this video! I’ll get better on the next one, I promise 🙂

The world of hydroponics can be a bit intimidating to someone new to the methods. Even the subject of growing medium can seem convoluted. Should I use floral foam? Growstones? Perlite? Oasis cubes? Coconut chips or fiber? Rockwool? Should I just go jump in a river and fish for rocks?

Before you end up shivering from a frigid dip in the nearest river, look to this guide for information on a particular growing medium that is quite popular amongst hydroponics gardeners.

Hydroton, otherwise known as:

– Lightweight expanded clay aggregate
– LECA clay
– Clay pebbles
– and many other names

Allow me a bit of your time to lay out the good, the bad, the “do’s,” and the “don’ts” of this popular growing substrate.

  1. Very nice vedeo, are they good for growing vegetables like strawberries or herbs or tomatoes? What are the two chemicals you mentioned to add to the clay pebbles to start with? Thanks so much for replying

  2. Hi. I thought buying LECA would be easy, but when I went shopping online, I found there are pebbles and balls, so I don't know which of those I should buy. I tried to find out which brand or source would be better to no avail. I also found many sources and many sizes of package, and I don't know how pounds or liters translate into volume, and when I ask these questions, I don't get answers, just more ads and how-to-use information. Can you help me?

  3. Hey if i want to use a mix of Leca and potting mix for succulents … do the leca balls be kept at the base of pot or above the soil layer ..?? Am confused .. plz reply

  4. Dude! Stop repeating what you’ve already said! 6min video you repeatedly state that you can reuse pebbles, it’s cheap, you can wash them. You could fit this info in 10 seconds! So much water in your video!
