I had a bit of carrot fly last year (amazing where these things come from – considering sheep farms surround me and my few neighbours don't bother growing their own), so I'm trying a black variety and a yellow variety of carrot, as I have heard it said that they are less susceptible.
However, I will play it safe (can't afford to experiment this year) and once I have my new bird netting I will plant onion seedlings in between carrots and radish.
Also, I'm varying my radish types and growing Japanese whites, much longer and good for cooking apparently. Worth trying.
This season I'm going to try making seed starting gel with corn starch for the carrots. Watched a video with impressive results the other day. Carrots prefer sand and compost. Look up Pascal Poot.
I have no luck with carrots. I like your idea of mixing the seeds for spacing, but I hate radishes! dilemma.
Mneeeeah, watchup doc? No loose soil?
Watching u from korea thanks for great videos. I have q. Did u let carrots grow during winter? I guess not. Is RS method work during winter without greenhouse? Btw RS said not to cover seeds with hay. How did you do about that with ur carrot
why did the weeds break through? how did you avoid that in other Ruth Stout beds?
I think your radish/carrot idea was brilliant … just incorrect ratio.
maybe try 2:1 (more radish) or even 3:1 ?
I really enjoy your videos. They are extremely informative and well edited! As a market gardener with heavy clay soil I have never attempted to grow root veggies until this year. I am testing out the Ruth Stout method of growing potatoes for my family because I watched your channel. You are making a difference in many peoples lives with the content that you provide. Thank you so much for sharing!! Cheers Scott
I've seen many videos showing how you should be doing stuff and sometimes some results too. Now seeing what it actually looks like when you don't follow the rules without me actually spending time failing.. or even better seeing how I failed the same way and not feeling so bad about it.. that is priceless. Heading to your Patreon now. Thank you.

Probably because no carbon . Put wood chips down first and then the hay
Hellohttps://youtu.be/Q8hh2nj2sR0
First year, could you put down a thick layer of compost and/or topsoil, then the hay and plant into that?
I jump a little every time a Canadian says OUT…..
A light dusting of wood ashes helps onions tremendously…..
2 years later and youe still reading comments crazy good video keep up the good work
Thanks
Wrong breed on the seeds maybe? there's a tiny carrot bread that might be worth trying out with a bigger top bulb cover crop and slightly deeper mulch it would be wonderful cover crop style garden. If you live in an area with near 365 grow season you could do the whole thing later and start with beans.
Crisp and sweet, is good enough for me, even though they were tiny
Did you fertilize?
I mean they grew with bearly any effort. I say that's a success
Forgive me if you've covered this in another video and I just forgot, but have you started letting some of your crops like carrots or radishes go to seed to plant the following year? Any tips for identifying when the seeds are ready in some of those tiny flowers?
You are not alone in the 'small' onion problem. After many failed attempts….well you'll understand right away. A wonderful older gentleman that always has the most outstanding colourful gardens you can imagine, came over to ask me why I kept fussing in the same area. Told him my dilemma and he started laughing. "Girl, it's the easiest thing ever! All you need to do is bare the top half of the bulb the last part of growing season."
Needless to say nobody laughs at my onions anymore ! I love my neighbour he sure saved me some grief!
BTW You two are adorable. God bless you and your garden. lol
Much love from Beautiful B.C.
I love how open and down to earth y’all are.
l found out about growing carrots in straw bales by accident l was on a bale of straw and l spilled a packet of carrot seeds over half the bale when l saw young carrots l fed with comfrey juice l had a great crop of very clean straight carrots //PS that was 50+ years ago
Hay has grass seeds in it you should of used straw
Diagnosis: compacted soil, probably from mowing.
I grieved when I saw you pulling Wood Sorrel plants !! They are a free anti-cancer sour grass ! They are excellent in salads ..taste a little salty lemon and that is from the Oxalic acid ..which is what kills cancer cells for free ! Look up Rene Caisse and get her book. It's awesome and free !
