Back again with Steven Cornett of Nature’s Always Right. In this video I asked him to share how me makes his potting soil and seed starting mix in bulk.
We go through his entire process of making his mix from scratch along with the reasoning BEHIND why he does it the way he does it.
In short:
– 1/3 peat moss
– 1/3 perlite (medium and fine grain)
– 1/3 home-made compost
– Handful of Azomite
– Handful of kelp meal
– Home-made worm tea to moisten and inoculate
It’s a powerful mix that starts your plants out with LIVING soil instead of store-bought sterile soil. This is really important in Steven’s farm – he wants to play WITH nature’s systems instead of against them…and the living soil potting mix is a huge part of it.

Fantastic video. Novice at this but going to make some potting mix this week. Would it be ok to add some well rotted cow manure ( has turned composty over the years) to store bought multi purpose compost along with the perlite or would this be too rich?
Will vermiculite work instead of the perlite
Can I add sand instead of perlite?
Please advise. Thanks
That looks more like 1/8th inch hardware cloth to me. I use 1/4" and i end up with bigger chunks in my mix. Not so smooth & uniform but a LOT easier to sift.
Nice friendship! Nice team work
where can we buy peat moss at that cheap price!
Steve, I think you have awesome eyebrows, I wanted to comment on this old video, Borax has boron in it which is very beneficial to the stem structure of new plants. You may already know this, I live in tucson arizona and I usually just grow in my own mulch compost.
He could start seeds on those eyebrows
Awesome information guys! I'm definitely trying this tomorrow!
Can we use sand instead of perlite? Please advise
What could be used besides the peat moss?
I recently planted some sunflowers and other flowers in pots using only sphagnum peat moss and compost/cow manure (per a youtuber's recommendations), but I read today that using too much peat moss can make the soil pH too high, which most plants can't tolerate. Is this true? Because it looks like your friend used mostly peat moss and compost.
EYE WAS JUST BROWSING FOR A GOOD POTTING PIX VID AND CAME ACROSS THIS GEM
The thing is, i live in a third world country, and its ALOT more harder to find everything in this video, but even if i find some, it’d be overpriced and in a tiny bag
THANKS FOR A BRILL TALK THROUGH very informative especially the worm tea
This dude is gonna have some serious lung problems later in life. Wear a mask when dumping perlite!
Also, people should probably look up "perlite and flouride"
Thanks so much for the ratio… I was just being random before.
You guys put out really good content, but good lord, when you put that perlite in it was cringe worthy, dont breathe that crap in guys,,,,,I do the dump and and run method
Replace the p moss with coco coir.
Where does this guy go to get his perlite???
For 15 $ ???
Mannnnnn……sweet deal
Thank a lot for quality informations.
Love these videos, especially how you're both commentating, there's so much knowledge being dished out. Great work!
In Australia those perlite bags are $60AUD.
I would have put the perlite in second and worn a dust mask
Soil seed I use seed chaps, check it
