Stratification sounds scientific, what does it mean, why does it matter to my seed starting routine, how do I do it, for how long should I do it, and what seeds need to be stratified? These questions and more we will answer in today’s episode.

I am testing three different ways to germinate lavender. Right now I am having another idea. Fill a small butter pot with wet soil and keep it in the fridge . . .
Oh my word!!! THANK YOU so much for actually SHOWING how to do this versus just describing it.
I planted so many poppy seeds and only ONE sprouted and I’m guessing this may we why
Hi luke, do Laurel seeds can be stratified? Thank you.
Hello Luke ! I appreciate if you can help me how to do stratification for bay leaf seeds which is really hard and long to germinate. I’m really interested to germinate bay leaf seeds but always failed . Please kindly help me . Do I have to put it in the fridge or freezer for quick germination? Thank you very much if you can send me information about it.
It sounds like I would just cold stratify it in the ground over winter.
Do Morning Glories need stratification? Nasturtiums?…or do they recommend soaking overnight with these and others just because the seed hulls are so hard?
Could this be why my Parsley plants from seed seem to struggle just to grow?
I don't have paper towel can i use cotton ball?. I hope you answer my question.
hey luke I had a problem with your website you should put an search button on the seeds area
Hello and thanks for thebinfo. Just picked a few blackberries today- June 26. Can I put those seeds in the garden and let it stay through the winter months?
What would a good method for stratification if off grid?
Mine froze are they still good? 🙁
When Can stratify raspberry seeds
Suppose I want to start some Wild Columbine seeds in August in East Texas. Can I keep them indoors in a sunny location all throughout winter so that they have significant growth leading up to next spring, and then, without them going dormant, could I reasonably expect blooms next spring to be possible? Or, should I grow into the winter, then plant into the garden before the worst of winter, to allow the plants to go dormant for at least a month. Thanks for taking the time to read this far.
All fruit seeds require strat, and if you look up region of origin for a specific plant you can find out how the winters are and what month to sew. Agriculture runs in my family, but I haven't been successful with lavender. Now I know what will work. Seed packets tell you when to germinate but with lavender it says warm water and warm environment before sewing outdoors. I've had whole packets fail on me. Then I had a packet that had 7 successful in the warm germination, without strat. Once moved outside they died! Next time I will strat first, then move to a seed starter mix, and I'm expecting successful results this time. Always research what you are planting. Buying small plants is expensive, failure of seed planting is frustrating and can cost plenty, but seed conservation is free, and done right will have higher germination rate.
How long do I leave arborvitae seeds in the refrigerator? I’ve read 2-3 months. Is that the right amount of time? Thanks!
Can you mix seeds in the process? Granted youll lose track of what is what but can you still?
I unknowingly cold stratified in kiwi seeds from the fruit in the same Ziploc bag method when I was 9….. But none germinated in the fridge, so I thought they were dead and took them out and left them near the table uncared for a month or two…. Literally all of them Germinated….. But somehow they got fire ants on them, so I had to toss them…..
Question : I live in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, which I believe is zone 7a (please correct me if I'm wrong). I read somewhere that the PawPaw is native to Ontario, so can't I just plant my seeds directly into the ground? Won't winter naturally stratify the seeds?
Please let me know ASAP. My Rotts ripped out my second PawPaw tree (the first one is still standing), so I ordered more seeds that'll be here shortly.
Thank you! This explains a lot of what I've been doing wrong. I only had oregano, basil, thyme and dill come up for me this year. Now I know the correct way! Appreciate it!
Hey i used moss peat..and i putted in my fridge but …i am seeing condensation water droplets …what to do??
Excellent video! You’re my favorite!
Why didnt u show us whether they have germinated…
Incomplete video
Thank you. This is the most informative video on stratification I have seen.
I've cold stratified some berries! Before blending the seeds out of them, How log do you think the seeds might be good for after cold stratified?
I would really like some help, I've recently cold stratified some Cryptomeria Japonica (type of Bonsai) seeds, and it said to leave it in the fridge for 2-3 weeks, I took them out at the 2-week mark but I'm not sure if I was supposed to leave them in the fridge until a little plant started showing. the pot has been on my windowsill for a few weeks now but nothings come out yet. Someone pls help me 🙁
But I live in the Caribbean. Absolutely no cold here. Would I still need to stratify ?
