VIDEO: Strawberries – How We Use the Deep Mulch Method

We don’t thin or separate our strawberry plants.Every other year we deep mulch our strawberry plants. We cover the entire bed with a very thick layer of leaves. We cover them so completely the plants aren’t even visible. The strong hardy plants push through the mulch layer in the spring for our new crop. We do this every other year instead of thinning and separating our plants.

  1. Wow! Those strawberry plants do look healthy and full! I hope you get a great harvest this year and that the squirrels and bugs do not get to them. Like you say, you may even get some from outside the fence! Amazing how good results can be when you put in the hard work to make that happen!!!

  2. Your strawberry plants are beautiful! Those blooms indicate a bumper crop. Do you freeze some or make jam when they all ripen near the same time? You have a nice garden. Hope you have a good day.

  3. I have a problem with roly-poly bugs eating my strawberries. Do you find that the leaf mulch attracts them? Also, how cool should it be before adding the mulch (I am using straw)? Thanks for the video.
