Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂
Looks like an awesome juicer. Important thing to remember though is juices should be consumed in moderation also. 1 glass a day isnt where you'll run into issues but juice typically contains similar amounts of sugar to the average softdrink , often more. Juice separates the fiber from the flavor and sugar allowing you to consume vastly more calories than you normally could from fruit and veg.
Juice should be enjoyed as any other treat when people start missusing it as a food replacement or drinking large quantities thinking it ill do them good is when it does the exact opposite.
Hey Mark,
Do you ever utilize canning fruit and veg for later use?
Thank you,
Aubrey
My latest fruit order came from daleys a few days ago. Same box but mine had a bunch of citrus, some smaller finger limes, a guava and an achacha. The achacha is an amazing tasting fruit if you haven't tried it. It tastes like sherbet! Also a great alternative to soda is water kefir. You can flavour it with things like ginger and apple for a ginger beer flavour. It is a fermented drink with a fraction of the sugar. It's great!
Are most of your fruit trees from Daley's ?
Hi Mark
itd be great if you could share some of your methods to flavor water you mentioned on here. I'm familiar with leinster but what herbs do you use ?
My favorite recipes for my cold press juicer: beetroot, apple, ginger. And kale/spinach (or both) apple, orange and mint. Quantities can be adjusted to your taste but treat the ingredients listed in the order of importance so more beetroot and spinach to the other ingredients. I use 3-4 beets, 1 apple and a lot of ginger, but I love the firey kick other maybe not as much. Oh, just remembered I also put a carrot or 2 in both recipes.
Haven't heard about that high dollar juicer in yr.s so I'm guessing it tossed a con-rod threw the block in the 1st wk.
The Kuvings EVO820 runs about $600 USD on Amazon, which is about the same amount you would spend on maybe 150 cases of 12 cans of soda. I know families that drink that much soda in a year.
Cool to see the post lady able to reach you guys.
I've gotta go about 35 minutes down the mountain now for my packages.
Love the peace and quiet otherwise though.
I like making iced tea with herbs from my garden and hibiscus I buy from a store. it's a really fruity flower
Daley's plant nursery is awesome! They deliver Australia wide!
Add CO2 to a diluted juice with a soda maker and you have a premium soft drink. Not even the sugar is a problem when it's not just sugar and citric acid and aroma but some minerals too
With that garden you'll need a juicing room. Or a juicing compound. It's rather a small unit for someone like you. You should have gone industrial. It's too slow for soft fruit like apples right?
I haven't touched soda for 20 years, but I make Ginger Wine and just decided to make some home brewed Ginger Ale. It is sweetened by Stevia and I only used enough sugar for the Champagne Yeast to work it's magic. You got me interested in growing Turmeric and it's doing even better than the Ginger, so next year I'm making a Ginger/Turmeric Tonic.
I always like your videos and I'm envious of your huge garden and raised beds.
Boy you nailed it on the problems with weight gain with drinking soda drinks.
How's the juicer going 2 years on?
I use Daleys, too…their plants are always in top condition and very well packaged…good choice!
I drink pulp free nudie orange juice mixed white water, 1-5 ratio 1 part orange juice 4 parts water. Like a natural cordial. I have a relative that has had her stomach clamped because she can’t loose weight, but she puts it back on once the stomach stretches back out. She tells me she drinks 2L of coke, at least, everyday. I wonder why she can’t keep the weight off.
Disappointed Mark. You didn't show us how it works 🙁
Special food( soda, Ice cream etc ) is for special occasions 3 times a year..not 3 times a day.. and not after exercise..
Hi Mark I suggest you don't grind turmeric in there. The stain is hard to come off.
Ah like buying stuff from amazon. That face like "What is this and why did I buy it?".
First time I ever heard of a muddler. One of my biggest objections to soda is the noncompostable plastic bottles.
all of this space and you have a tiny kitchen?????????????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME
