See my favorite new raised beds here: https://shop.epicgardening.com/ Two of my good friends recently asked me to help them set up a DIY raised garden bed in their suburban backyard. I jumped at the chance, because they’d never wanted to garden before! What a great opportunity.
In today’s video, we’re going to walk them through planning their raised beds, buying and mixing soil, selecting plants, and both transplanting and direct-sowing their seeds. It’s a bit of a longer, more narrative-style video today, so I hope you enjoy the journey.
As a beginner, raised-bed gardening is probably your best path into the world of gardening in general. As long as you make it simple, cheap, and no-fail, you’ll be well on your way to gardening for many years to come.

I think we all know deep down that Chad & Todd's garden is going to fail unless Kevin routinely visits to help them out. You could hear in his voice and see in his eyes he knows it too.
Fun and funny to watch!
Don’t you have to soak the peat moss before you put it into the bed or can it go in dry and mix it in, since you’re going to water it all together?
Kevin, it looks like you're using Pressure Treated 2×6's? I thought pressure treated lumber was bad for plants – the chemicals they use to treat the lumber, that is. Can you clarify? Thanks!
Great video!!! Is it really 3 kale per square? The book says 1 but I’m happy to be tighter.
I was really trying to tell my parents how to keep the plants, that I bought and grew from seeds, alive and they won’t listen, so all of their plants are going to die because they aren’t listening.

what's that stuff you put on the bottom of the raised beds? is that something we should do? I'm trying to see if it's necessary to put a metal mesh and a plastic or other liner.

Why is potting soil not good?
What is the lining made of?
Horse manure rocks all over other types of manure. Find a horse stable that sells manure or is willing to donate. You just have to be careful of the horses' diet: no pesticides, herbicides, and alfalfa is a problem. Some people use only horse manure or horse manure compost in their raised vegetable beds and nothing else, and their plants do vey well.
I’m so jealous that you have buddies to garden with. None of my homies want to get their hands dirty….
Where is the update video?
