Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂
I grew a broadleaf endive (what we call escarole) last fall and I am going to try to collect seeds this summer so I can grow them again. My girlfriend likes dandelion greens and escarole has a similar use. She loved it. Can't wait to grow more.
I see everyone saying to grow together. Yet seed package says grow 6-8 inch apart. I’m confused?
Thank you so much! I love Endive too, even when both my grandmother and mother cooked it for a long time, so it got very bitter. We sometimes even threw some applesauce on to make it a little sweeter 😉
I am definitely going to plant some in our garden!
that dish with the egg made me excited for these to grow. hurry cold weather hurry
This episode was fucking hilarious dude, please just tell as many of your jokes as possible I love it.
This plant may be a good candidate for Hydro, even, outdoor !!!!! But I will let it take hold inside a potter full of good soil, first. HOW deep do the roots go? / IS it like "American Chicory" where you can cut, and roast, the root and consume such as a Tea / Coffee ????
Thanks Dude, lots of info I needed, you also made me laugh 😀
I love your videos! very informative.
I need to be able to grow food for my beardie so it helps this is easy to grow
The French, Italians, etc love them, here in South Africa little is known about them. Busy growing my first batch, looking forward to it.
motivating
Oooo…..I was the 1000th like…lol. Growing Endive now……can't wait! Thanks for the recipe ideas!
I grow endive and escarole for two things: Italian Wedding Soup and Beans & Greens. http://cmhmdrecipes.blogspot.com/2014/12/beans-and-greens.html
My cockatoo loves nibbling on endive. It's something I can easily and cheaply grow for him that's really really good for him too. I love it in a mixed salad. Just delicious.
Us Greeks eat endive as a dish called 'horta' you can look up a recipe. But essentially all you do is boil them in water until soft, strain and add salt olive oil and lemon (add salt to the water prior to boiling)! Yum
Another excellent tutorial. You are inspirational, witty, & funny. Have you tried Moringa? I farm it.
I grew up in Italy and our favorite salad was a type of leaf chicory finely shredded and with just olive oil and vinegar and salt. (cut and come again vs. heading). I found the seeds at a company called seeds of Italy online. They have many varieties. and so far in testing them my favorite is a roman variety of curled cutting chicory by Franchi seeds called " Indivia Riccia romanesca da taglio" and the packets have tons of seed to keep you going for quite some time.
Andijvie 🙂 In the Netherlands we put it in a mesh.

Hi, what is the name of this advice? I don't like curl endive that stays low and doesn't grow up. I mean that those that grow low to the ground I like them like yours
Came for the knowledge, stayed for the Dad jokes.
Awesome video
I actually giggled watching this
Hi Mark. Do you grow chicory there?
Is it a cut and come back or and harvest once and done plant ?
love you!!!! thank you
Thanks I'm going to plant my seeds tonight now that I have the confidence and knowledge from your video
It is definitely a thumbs up! Thank you for the video. You are my best gardener! Cheers
